Re: Car Seat Chris is Back

I recently put in my very old 2000 chev Malibu the evenflo symphony 65 dlx (rear facing) Was not able to do a middle seat install without it sliding around so I have it rear passenger right now. Any tips for installing in the middle?
The seat will not work in the middle for a variety of reasons. You need to use passenger side with the shoulder and lp belt and using a locking clip. It is a good idea to consider having the seat checked at a fitting station. FM if you would like to come see me.

I am so glad for this thread! It comes at a time when I have a million questions at once. Thank you Chris!
DS is 4 1/2 - 43 lbs and 42 inches.
We have a 2005 Civic and 2010 CRV. Our current car seats are the Britax Pavilion 70 G3 and the Graco My Ride.
1) Which seat is best for which car, and where is the best placement for that car seat in that particular car? No one/nothing else is back there besides him.
2) Is the latch weight limit 40 lbs or 50 lbs?
3) I need to buy a seat for DS' grandfather's car, as he drives him a couple of times a week. He has a 2013 Nissan Altima. What do you suggest for that car?
Thanks again!!!
I am actually impressed that you are continuing to use a harness for your child beyond 4. Use the Pavilion in the CRV and the My Ride in the Civic. I would go withe the passenger rear for the seats. Main reason is the positioning of the shoulder belts makes the side easier to install that the middle.
LATCH is limited to 40 lbs
For the grandfathers car go with the Graco Argos or Nautilus
Thanks for the help!
The Pavilion is less than a year old (replaced due to an accident) and the My Ride is not even 2 years old. I didn't see the need to replace them since DS is within the weight limit. But not for the latch. We'll need to be fixing that.
I was hoping to spend less than the Nautilus costs for grandpa's car, but that's okay.
edited to ask - what do you think of the Graco Affix?

The Graco Affix is a great booster because the price and the fact it latches in. The LATCH serves as a way of preventing the booster seat from flying around in the car in case of a crash. It is not an installment like a car seat.

Got it. So last set of questions. Would the Affix be just as good of a choice for my 4 1/2 yo DS in grandpa's car?
And since he is in convertible seats in my cars at such a late age, is there a point where I should replace the seats with boosters, even if he's still within the weight limit? Thanks again!

Re: Car Seat Chris is Back
Hi,
My DD is 5 and we still have her in the Graco Nautilus. I really don't want to put her in a booster just yet, I like that she's in the 5 point harness and want to keep her in it as long as possible. The thing is, how do I secure the carseat now that she is about 43 lbs?...........I know the LATCH is not suitable anymore. Can I secure her seat with LATCH and the seatbelt? I really want to hold off on the booster.
Thanks!!!!

Yes it would be a good choice.
The longer a child is in a 5-point harness the safer it is. That said if yo start using a booster in one car and a 5-point in another you may start having issues with the child "buying into" the use of the 5-point. There is no wrong answer here on your decision.
As far as placement - either rear side. Be careful of using a booster in the center. the angle the shoulder belt comes from sometimes makes it impossible to use it there. Also in some cars the center seat belt is not truly center but off center. This can, in some cases bring the booster off a flat surface into an angle.

No, you have to change the installation method from LATCH to the belt system. It is dangerous to use both.

First it is against every car seat manufactures directions. The Child seat is designed to react one way with the seat belt and another with the LATCH. By using both you are placing pressure at several points along the shell of the seat that was not made to occur.
If you look at your owners manual you will see directions on how to install the seat with LATCH and how to with the seat belt system.
Using both you are actually endangering the child's safety. There is a misconception here that more is better. If you look at the LATCH strap and a seat belt you will see it is not a solid piece of material but rather a weave. This is the case because the straps are designed to stretch out which absorbs the forces of the crash. This movement must be allowed. By doubling the connection by using both the forces of the crash will be transferred to the child.
Therefore we never use the LATCH and seat belt.

Re: Car Seat Chris is Back
my older ds is 5 and weighs 37lbs and is 44.75 inches tall so he has grown out of his britax for height. Which seat should I get? We have a nautilus in our crv for him but need a seat for our Honda odyssey. What would you recommend for him since I guess he isn't quite heavy enough for a booster
TIA

For the Honda Pilot, in no particular order:
Britax Frontier 90, Graco Nautilus, Graco Argos, Graco Argos Elite, Evenflo Symphony

I am actually impressed that you are continuing to use a harness for your child beyond 4. Use the Pavilion in the CRV and the My Ride in the Civic. I would go withe the passenger rear for the seats.

Re: Car Seat Chris is Back
Do you think he Cosco Convertible Scenera or the Cosco Convertible Apt 40RF are a decent choice for a carseat in my husbands car which we only use 10-20% of the time? He will be getting a Ford Edge or a Ford Escape.
I have a Britax Marathon in my car Grand Jeep Cherokee and my daughter is still rear facing. The other option is to move the Britax back and forth between cars.
