Carpet in childrens bedrooms...yay or nay?

I am trying to move my son into his big boy bedroom and I want to carpet it, but looking at design websites, most kids have hardwood floors.

The floors in the room right now are stripped & varnished floorboards. They would probably need refinishing anyway, but carpeting just seems so nice and cozy!

Whats your advice? Decision making is not my strong point!

Re: Carpet in childrens bedrooms...yay or nay?

I probably won't be of any help.

DD's room is hardwood, but I do have a large area rug that covers the majority of her room. The reason being is that her room tends to be colder than other rooms in the house, and I thought the rug would warm it up. I did not want to put wall to wall in there though as I'm not a fan of it.

With that said....

DS' room is upstairs (we have an expanded ranch, DD and our room is downstairs and the other two bedrooms are upstairs). Our entire upstairs is carpeted, so DS' room has wall to wall.

I think both look nice..... Chat Icon

ETA: I feel though hardwood is easier maintenance-wise as you don't have to worry about stains, etc....

I would probably put a large area rug in the room, but that's mostly because everyone in my family are allergy sufferers and carpet holds so much dust particles IMO.

I'm not a fan of carpet in general, JMO. Our whole house is hardwood. We have large area rugs in both the kids rooms.

I would finish the floors and throw down an area rug. Easier to change/update an area rug than wall to wall anyway-- and I prefer hardwoods.

Ds room has hardwoord that we stripped and sealed (no stain). I then put carpet on it because he is a climber and if he wiped out it would be an easier fall. When he is older I plan on taking it up and staining the floor.

While I love hardwood, I prefer carpeting in bedrooms. I just think it is softer and warmer...even moreso than area rugs.

We have hardwood or tile everywhere except the bedrooms. I feel they are a lot more cozy, and we don't allow food or shoes upstairs where the bedrooms are so maintenance of them is not a problem at all.

Re: Carpet in childrens bedrooms...yay or nay?

My kids rooms have hardwood & area rugs. My DDs room is small so it's not that big a deal but my boys' room is large and they have a nice thick area rug but I am still thinking about carpeting it again. It's just loud and carpeting just makes it nicer for the BR IMO. I like the hardwood look but the carpeting is so much more play friendly for the kids too.

I like carpeting in bedrooms, especially kids rooms.

We have hardwood with an area rug in DD's bedroom and she's always going into the nursery to play on the carpet.

I also find it easier just to vacuum the carpet than to vacuum the area rug & sweep/wash the hardwood around it.

Re: Carpet in childrens bedrooms...yay or nay?

I like carpeting in bedrooms Rach.

For kids I think it is best because it is soft and cozy. I also prefer to vaccuum the carpet than hunting down those pesty dust bunnies that blow under everything

ETA with my area rugs in my living room and dining room im constantly sweeping under them and polishing under them, i wouldnt want to do that in a kids room... you will be finding cookies under there Chat Icon

Carpet in all the bedrooms. Much nicer to lay on, play on, etc.

I love carpet in bedrooms! Muffles the kids' noises and is warmer/softer on their feet. Also nicer to play on the floors than hardwood would be.

I have hardwoods through out my house but we are moving DD to her big girl room soon and I am going to put carpeting in it.
I don't allow my kids to eat or drink in there room so I am not worried about it staining.

Does he have dust allergies? If so, I definitely would not.

Re: Carpet in childrens bedrooms...yay or nay?

I'm debating this right now. We have hardwood floors throughout our entire house, we had them redone last summer. But, DS' room is partially above the garage and it's cold so I just mentioned to DH that maybe we should carper it. Plus, it will help with noise, especially when I'm sneaking into his room to check on him or fix his blanket since he has bionic hearing and hears every little creak the floor makes. After reading the answers to this post, I'm definitely leaning more towards w-w carpeting. But, what color. Hmm...

Re: Carpet in childrens bedrooms...yay or nay?

On a lot of the HGTV shows, they put down this carpeting that's in squares--like tiles--so if there is ever a spill, bathroom accident, a kid gets sick, etc. you can easily replace that "tile" of carpeting.

When DH and I have kids, we'll probably look into this for their rooms as I like carpeting in bedrooms but I think it gets messed up very easily by kids.

Re: Carpet in childrens bedrooms...yay or nay?

i think its a personal choice. We have been in our house for 3 years. Now with a second child we will put carpet. With DD who is 2 running with stompy feet and toys such as blocks get loud we are carpeting all the bedrooms and upstairs and our family room. I am done with the hardwood floors. Chat Icon
