Re: Cash as end of year teacher's gift?

I give cash and will always give cash. People need cash or gift cards they can actually use not clutter.
I think people should be thankful/appreciative for anything extra they receive. My DD is 5 and likes to choose a gift for her teacher. If they don't like something they can donate it.

Agreed. My DS really wanted to pick out a necklace for his K teacher since she was into jewelry and he just loved her. Maybe she would have preferred cash but it meant a lot to him.

I'm the class mom and collected a lump sum at the beginning of the year. Gave half for Christmas and giving rest for end of year, both in the form of a TD Bank gift card (no fees). My personal gift will include cash in a Vera Bradley purse (she's a young, fun teacher).
Not directing this at you personally, but what is the reason we do the general class gift but then everyone gives their own individual gift in addition to this? I just don't get it and I'm kind of feeling like when is it enough?
Because the class gift is only $10 for Christmas, $10 end of year (school rule is $20 max total per child per year). $10 is not nearly enough to thank this woman who spends hours a day with my son and is quite frankly the best teacher he has ever had. We will be showering her with appreciation. It's a personal choice. I don't know the statistic on how many other students also do an individual gift but I know my immediate circle of friends do.
I understand it's a personal choice. Of course it is in the end. But I do perceive that there is social pressure- a keeping up with the Jones's aspect to it. I just don't understand how it's become so many gifts throughout the year. Teacher appreciation day, holidays, end of the year gifts all on top of the $$ the class moms collect from us. In my opinion, it's getting to be a bit much.

Re: Cash as end of year teacher's gift?
I don't know, I find it kind of demeaning to give cash as appreciation for helping my child grow. Money cannot quantify the value of a teacher to their student, if it did I could not afford the amount of cash they truly deserve. I would think a handwritten card from the student and if a monetary gift is what you want to give maybe a small thoughtful gift card would have more sentimentality.

I'm a teacher, and I love Amazon gift cards! Target too. I am getting my daughters' teacher/day care providers (we have an 8 yr old and 2 yr old) Amazon gift cards this year.

Re: Cash as end of year teacher's gift?
I'm sure every teacher is appreciative of any gift
But for example lol
My mil is a teacher. In her school they rotate so she has two classes she teaches
End of the year her table is filled. Overflowed. With candles. Lotions. Scarf sets. Pins. Bracelets. Little knick knacks. It's not that she does not appreciate it it's just overwhelming and she's the type that if you give her a scarf for example. She will Wear it so you can see it,even if she don't like it lol

Gift card with a note from the child.
The teachers do NOT need plants, wine glasses, etc etc etc.
Gift card because of all the money they have to personally put out for their students during the year.

Cash as end of year teacher's gift?
My DD isn't in school yet but I gave nice wallets with cash in them to her daycare teachers for Christmas. She is moving up soon and I will give cash in a wrestler or something to the teachers.
I think anything is appreciated but I would feel bad giving something they couldn't use and they can obviously use cash!

I get creative and look up things teachers use:
Hand sanitizer ...from Bath and Body Works Personalized note pads : shutterfly
The LI Public school district teachers have to go out and buy all supplies out of their own wallets? I thought that was more private / catholic school?
I gave up with keeping up with the Jones' a looong time ago. There is always some one else out there doing better than you. You can drive yourself crazy doing that. It is becoming a society where you are always giving the child what they want rather than what they really need.

I agree. If some token of appreciation is given, fine. My son likes to see and have input on what he is giving his teacher. It means more and teaches the child the thought of giving when they are giving something that is from them.

I can't speak for LI public teachers, but as a NYC public teacher, we get about $130 a year for teaching supplies. To be honest, that money doesn't go very far and I spend a lot of money out of pocket.

OP- Target gift cards are great. I'm sure your LO's teacher will appreciate that.
