Cast iron pan, how to clean?
I use this heavy thing for making perfect steaks indoors. When I bought it, it was already 'seasoned' I was told never to wash it with soap. Only scrub with hot water. Is this true? I have never used to soap & it looks clean but I still think it's gross.

Re: Cast iron pan, how to clean?
thank you for asking this- I was told the same thing about my cast iron dutch oven that I make chilli in and I am completely grossed out by the idea of using it now after not soaping it up

Re: Cast iron pan, how to clean?
That is how I clean mine. SCALDING hot water and scrub with a harsh sponge that doesn't have any soap in it. Then I spray with Pam and wipe down.
You CAN use a mild soap on it and reseason it, but I wouldn't make a habit out of it.

Re: Cast iron pan, how to clean?
I just use hot water and a dishrag or sponge.. I don't even scrub it unless there are super stubborn bits stuck to it. Then I oil it with a little olive oil or Crisco and put it away.
I never use soap on it - never had a need.

Re: Cast iron pan, how to clean?
if you ever invited to a bonfire, bring your pan. we moved to the country...everyone brings their cast iron cookware and tosses them into the fire. gets all the cruddy stuff off.

That's such a great idea!
Periodically I will put some Crisco on it and throw it in the oven at the highest heat possible to keep it seasoned. I'm thinking the bonfire is a way more fun way to accomplish this!
