cat people question

I am not allowed to have a cat (my entire family is allergic and i could get one but then i can not have family over ever which for me would stink) so dh and i found this cat that hangs out at the house we are closing on. It has a collar with a bell on it didn't notice a name tag but we have a deli three houses away and i am thinking it's their mouser. I always wanted a cat though!

Anyway, it is VERY friendly and comes to you when you pat your lap and and say come here. So i was wondering is okay for me to give it treats and attention? I am not saying bringing it in the house and giving it a home since I think it has one but just hanging out in the yard with it and giving it some water and treaties when he/she comes to visit.

Thanks!

Re: cat people question

having no real experience with strays or mousers, i would say it's fine... BUT keep in mind that if she's not fixed, she could very well have a litter of kittens on your property and that's something else you might have to deal with Chat Icon

Re: cat people question

There is nothing wrong with that. But keep in mind, yes, she may hang around alot and make your house her new home...so will you be ready for that if that happens?Chat Icon

Re: cat people question

as long as she stays outside its fine with me. I can not bring her inside as i explained about allergies and i think she really does have a home. She is way to friendly to be a stray and I think she is fixed or he is fixed but I really can't tell yet. I don't even mind the presents sometimes cats leave (sad when its a bird but thankful if its a mouse) LoL We call it stubby because it has no tail.

Maybe when we move in we will meet some neighbors and ask around. Find out for sure if its fixed too, if not then i may have to ignore in fear of kittens or have to catch it to get it fixed.

Re: cat people question

I guess since it has a collar, it is someone's cat. I would normally say you should trap and release this cat to make sure it is spayed/neutered, but I don't think you should do this to a cat that obviously belongs to someone.
I don't see the harm in giving it some love!

Absolutely! Give the kitty lots of loving. We feed stray cats and always have neighborhood "outside" cats in our yard. We pet them all and play with them but always wash our hands well when we get inside before going near our own cats. It may be someone's cat, but the may not take care of keeping them up to date with their shots.

ITA with this. I ALSO agree with the above post that said to be ready to deal with the possibility of kittens. OHHHHH have I been there--and now DH pretends he doesn't know me whenever we see a stray cat around.
