HELPPPPPP!

I'm a Queens transplant. In Queens we had water bugs, mice, mosquitoes, even roaches in one awful apartment. I've seen possums and raccoons and even a skunk.

Nothing- NOTHING has gotten to me like the god forsaken cave crickets. I hate them. With the fire of a thousand burning suns.

Our basement is unfinished but our laundry room is down there. I live in constant fear of going down there and seeing one. I got a bright idea in my head to spray one I saw the other day with raid and while it hopped angrily around the basement, THREE MORE CAME OUT OF THE WOODWORK. I ran upstairs and made my DH go bring the laundry up. Eff that noise.

We plan to finish the basement and I know that's the only real way to keep them out, but is there anything I can do? I need clean clothes! Chat Icon

My cat enjoys torturing, killing and then finally eating crickets.
Yeah it's a site to behold. Chat Icon
But in a way I don't mind it because she rids our house of them.

In your case, i'd probably be calling an exterminator to be honest.
Yuck!

I've NEVER seen that many, usually one here or there. I was thinking it was because it was so cold that day. There must be some way they are getting in.

Re: Cave Crickets

I don’t mean to laugh but I am hysterical reading this post. Because I was YOU!

These bugs are a Nassau and Suffolk bug, there are none in Queens or any other borough.

They have traumatized me for years on end. To this day, I freak out when I see one.

I have found we have so much less now the past few years than ever before for some reason.

You need yellow glue traps; only Ace Hardware sells them. Don’t bother with the ones from anywhere else.

Get them and put them around the perimeter of the basement walls.

Another thing is they love the damp. If your basement is damp, maybe put a humidifier down there in the meantime.

They love the dark. I used to keep the light on in the laundry room so I had no surprises when it was time to do the laundry.

I also did laundry during the day, and not at night when I feel they are out more.
Any seals, cracks, holes in your basement or foundation, seal it.

But I know what you are going through! These bugs suck!

We use sticky rat pads and my husband read to keep it a while since they feed off each other.

Re: Cave Crickets

We have them.

I don't like crickets in general. I feel like they jump at you and not away from you. Little f@*#ers!!

I one time had a bad problem with both types and I got the glue insect traps. I had two in my laundry room and one in the finished basement. It really solved the problem.

I also have one in the bathroom under the vanity.

Good luck!

Hopefully with the cold they will all die out soon.

Re: Cave Crickets

Ughhhh we get them too! Our basement is finished and they still come out. I hate them. We have glue traps around which does help and I haven't seen any since the few really cold days but I feel your pain. They scare the crap out of me all the time. I can kind of deal with the smaller ones but I run away if there's a huge one out. Chat Icon Can't do it!

It's funny because I grew up on LI in a high ranch w/ no basement and I've never seen one in my life until I moved into the house I am in now. My house is still on LI and has a basement and we get them every now and then. They are gross but I wouldn't say they are so rampant that we would need to call an exterminator.

Oh I know!! I read a lot about them and they do tend to jump AT whatever scares them. One jumped and landed on my leg. And they are so big that you can HEAR them land. Just thinking about it gives me the heebie jeebies. Chat Icon

I'm going to invest in approximately 1,000 glue traps. And if that doesn't help, I may just burn the house down, not sure yet.

Chat Icon Thanks for the tips!! And to know I'm not alone.

Chat Icon Well we were actually planning to get a cat for the family as a Christmas present. Our dog passed recently (the most fierce pitbull who would probably let a cave cricket jump off her head and not say "boo" Chat Icon) so the house is feeling a little empty, but I'm not ready for another dog yet. Hopefully whatever cat we get turns out to be a hunter! Chat Icon

I've recently taken to carrying my swiffer mop into the basement so I can smash them before they leap at me and scare the crap out of me.

Another thing that works well to catch them is a cheap, homemade cricket trap. Take a 2 liter soda bottle, cut the top of the bottle off about a third of the way down and then flip it around and insert it into the base. Fill it with a small amount of breadcrumbs and sugar. This will attract the crickets and when they jump in to get to the "food" they get stuck inside of the bottle. When it's time to get rid of them, simply toss the bottle and start over. You never have to touch them or pick up icky sticky tape with crickets attached. Worked like a charm for us! Chat Icon

We had two dogs! They were not the greatest protectors Chat Icon I literally had seen my dog sit by and let a mouse eat out of his food dish. Chat Icon

This definitely seals the deal on our idea to get a cat for the family for Christmas. Fingers crossed we get a hunter!

we had this powder thing in out basement in a plate that kinda looks like flour that repelled them. it worked for awhile Then they started coming around again. DH went to Home Depot and got the sticky traps. In about 10 mins both the traps were full. I was soooooooooo grossed out!!! (our basement is unfinished and laundry is down there)
