Re: Cave Crickets

FYI- when it comes to cats- the females are the hunters.
So if you want the cat to hunt these little bastards, get a female cat.
My male cat would lie there and look at bugs.
My female goes into full on predator mode.
It's hysterical.

get a cat!!

So funny, my dog does nothing. Useless Chat Icon Chat Icon

We had two dogs! They were not the greatest protectors Chat Icon I literally had seen my dog sit by and let a mouse eat out of his food dish. Chat Icon

This definitely seals the deal on our idea to get a cat for the family for Christmas. Fingers crossed we get a hunter!

Get a female cat. See my post above!

Typical, a female doing all the work while a male just stares at her.Chat Icon Chat Icon

LOL! Exactly. I even saw some video on Facebook recently with baby foxes in the wild and the dad fox was with them and they were all waiting for the mother fox to come back with a kill so they could eat.
So it's not just cats apparently!

WTH is a cave cricket?

I hate cats so if the solution were cats I’d be living with the crickets.

The same thing with lions in the wild. The females do all the hunting and take care of the cubs and the males just sit there and impregnate them all Chat Icon

We get them too! The trick, for me at least, is to hit them from behind. It works every single time. I don’t think they can sense what is behind them. I just grab a shoe and give them a whack!

They are crickets that are beige and small. And the jump towards you instead of away from you cause they’re eyes are backwards or something. They have grasshopper legs and jump high. So picture trying to smash one and it suddenly jumps towards you. They should not exist...

I’m so sorry to laugh at anyone’s expense but this thread is cracking me up! The dog watching a mouse eat its food, the poster who hates cats and would prefer the crickets, the dumb crickets jumping AT whatever they’re scared of - I just can’t. Chat Icon but OP I hope they go away quickly because they sound awful!!!

Re: Cave Crickets

The horror of those things. We had them in our last house and they lived in the basement. Every time I went down I held my breath, it’s like when you are going into a haunted house and you know someone is going to scare you and then they jump out and you scream anyways lol. I’m sorry I don't have recommendations. After I found one upstairs on my couch we moved (not just because of that but it helped the decision along lol)

I googled. I’ve never seen one but they look disgusting. Possibly worse than a cat but I’m not sold on it.

I’m also from queens and don’t do wildlife. The first time raccoons got into our garbage I thought it was those people with the carts who collect the bottles. I asked my neighbor why the bottle people out here are slobs and they definitely thought I was on drugs.

Re: Cave Crickets

I live on the Lower level/ street level of a high ranch. It is finished and we have them. One was in the bathroom tonight and it was stuck in there with me so I was able to kill it with the toilet brush. They like dark and moist.
We can not use the glue traps because of the dog. The dog does nothing to help with this situation.

Unfortunately, they are not all beige and small. I have had some giant a$$, toddler sized, black mother effers lunge at me. I've yet to recover, I'm still not OK. Chat Icon Chat Icon

YES! I was gonna say- mine are HUGE and black. The beige ones must be babies. I left my jeans to dry in my laundry room yesterday and this morning DH wouldn't go down and get them for me... I wore a pair of maternity jeans just so I wouldn't have to go down there since all my other jeans are ripped and not work appropriate. Chat Icon Not ashamed of this at all.

Chat Icon Thanks! And mind you, my dogs were NOT small. We're talking a pit bull and golden retriever mix, so each was a solid 80 lbs. Big babies. Chat Icon
