Cell phones...

What is the "right" age for a child to have a cell phone now?

My son came home with a girl's cell phone the other day. His school only goes from K-2, so she had to be around his age. I called the mom and returned the phone. It was prepaid, so I guess not really a big deal if it was lost.

I was kind of shocked that a child that young would have a phone but maybe that's the norm now, IDK. My niece and nephew share one, they are 7 and 9.

When are you guys getting phones for your children?

Re: Cell phones...

My son is 8 and in 4th grade. A small handful of his friends have cell phones.

I told him he can have one when he starts middle school IF his grades are good and he is a responsible, respectful and thoughtful person.

Cell phones...

DS is in seventh grade and I don't know any of his friends that DON'T have phones... except for him. I see no need for it.

I started to hear about "So-and-so has a cell phone" when he was in second grade. By fifth grade nearly everyone had them. My DD is in 1st grade and there are 3 kids in her class with phones.

I personally think the cell phone thing is ridiculous. I cannot think of a reason why a kid in elementary school needs a cell phone.

My 8th grader doesn't have a cell phone. I don't see the need. If there is an issue at school, there is a phone in the office students can use. Of he wants to call, his friends, or vice versa, we have a home phone. Completely unnecessary in elementary school.

We waited until middle school. We have a prepaid phone so no commitment/no cancellation fee.

If my kid is walking home from school or the bus, I want that call so it's worth the peace of mind.

We had elementary school kids with phones, we have middle school students with smart phones.

The plan is he gets it paid until he is eligible for working papers, then he pays. He also isn't getting a smart phone until he can pay for that too.

I'm liking middle school right now. I coach junior high and it helps me that they have cell phones.

Middle school when they are in more after school activities and my kids walk home from school. No smartphone though.

My dd used to call me from the office too when her phone was dead lol. I told her she must drive them crazy lol.

At what age will you get your child a cellphone?

Re: Cell phones...

Robbie is in 6th grade and evidently all of his friends have cell phones. We let him borrow his dad's when he is out with his friends but he's embarrassed to use it because it is not a Smart Phone like the rest of them have. *sigh*

I will not give him a cell phone with a plan until he has the means to pay for it on a regular basis or until he is so involved with activities away from us that he has a real need for it.

DD is 9 and has mentioned a couple of kids that have phones. She begs for an iPhone almost daily! She says she will use her own money to pay for the bill!!

I would get her a phone as soon as she is going to be walking home alone or left home alone, so that will probably be in 6th or 7th grade. Until then there is no need.

Re: Cell phones...

DD is 10 and has one. I think she was 8 when we first got her a phone. She only uses it when she is at a friends house, out riding her bike in the neighborhood, or visiting her dad back in NY (we're in PA) Plus, there are major parental controls. She can only dial the people on her contact list and vice versa.
