Charlie the paper shredder!

We adopted a little terrier mix from the shelter a year ago in July. Her name is Charlie, she's the sweetest thing in the world, is 2 years old, and we just love her to death.

I couldn't ask for a better dog. She is amazing with the kids. She makes me take longer walks and get more exercise. She is the greatest comfort at the end of a long day.

And she also has a shredding addiction.

We have to keep the bathroom door closed, had to get a garbage can with a lid (which she has since learned now to open), and have to keep the den door shut since there is a small garbage in there that my FIL throws away some of his trash in.

All day long she pulls paper plates, napkins, paper towels out of the various garbages and shreds them up. We tell her "drop it" and 50% of the time it works. The other 50% of the time she just runs upstairs or out the doggie door into the back yard and shreds it there, so we have to clean it up there.

How exactly do we get her to stop doing this? It's starting to drive me crazy!

My Dog buddy use to shred things because he was bored. Did you try to stuff a kong or bone? Maybe a crate/section off an area when you're not home?

The interesting thing is that she pretty much only does it when we are at home. She is definately doing it for attention, because she will bring us the paper towel and show it to us before she starts shredding it. I think she enjoys the chase!

We do play with her in the backyard every day that it is nice out, and she takes one 20 minute or so walk on nice days with me also. She has toys, many of which she loses and we have to find, hehee.
