Chat Icon Chat Icon How exciting! We should all definitely try to meet up. I'm around Monday 7/1, but am leaving town Tuesday morning.

I also live in the Ballantyne area. I live technically just south of Ballantyne, right on the border of SC. We love the area! And it is booming. I am partial to the southern end of Charlotte, but I know a lot of Long Islander's/NY'ers are very happy in northern Charlotte. I think it even looks like LI up there!!

I am not too familiar w/ the teaching industry, but my understanding is that the public school systems are always looking for teachers Chat Icon

If you need any info, just let us know - and Good Luck!

waxhaw

one of DH's bartenders live there. It's pretty country out there, but I would not call it "poor" country. Residents like it out there. The bartender isn't really country and he loves living there. I think it's sort of the best of both worlds.

Low crime rates. I am not sure what line of work you are looking for, but it would be best if you found it outside of the city if need be. That's what is going to save us. To live around or in Charlotte is more money. To live outside and find the right area is a good alternative to find less expensive housing.

We would love to live near the city(Dilworth)Chat Icon but that is far off. We have to finish making babies before we can venture into that price range.Chat Icon

Have you ever used Hotwire.com before? I definitely recommend it. For the night of the 1st there are a lot of great options - Just stick to the Uptown or South Park- Executive Park areas. Don't do airport hotels...

Also, commute question. How long does it take you to get to work? Donna is looking into Waxhaw, which is 12 miles on 521..to 485.

when my family was here, we were living up in huntersville, so they stayed up there. Candlewood, zip 28078. no complaints and about 65.00 a night.

Ha! They seriously should.

Commute wise...that actually sounds awful...521 is sooo slow when you hit Ballantyne area (all the traffic lights take forever) and I would really try to stay clear of 485 if at all possible. To get home, I currently take 77 to the Carowinds exit (1st exit is SC) then hop over to Ballantyne on Pineville Rock Hill Rd. Getting to work is not too bad...it's the commute home that is the killer. 485 is usually at a complete stand still - leaving at 5:30 usually takes us about 1 hr to get home if we take 485. 35-40 min if we take 77 to Carowinds exit.

Yeah, it's not too fun... They have plans to add an additional lane on 485 to try to alleviate some of the issues, but construction is not planned to start until 2012!!! Chat Icon We'll need even more lanes by then...

They obviously haven't thought of that...you know you need at least another lane to help out with traffic, but why do it now? Lets wait 5 yearsChat Icon

Any of you teachers?
How did you go about getting a job?

Rich is 6 credits shy of a masters in Special Ed, but he would really prefer not to teach special ed....he'd like to stay elementary.

Is Rich certified in NYS already? He'll get a job in a second. They pay, on the other hand, not so goodChat Icon if you go on the county school websites they publish the payscales.

he'll get a job over the phone. I would research the better paying county schools though. He might start making under $30K - mid $30s.

Re: Charlotte ladies - We're coming to visit the first week of July!

yes your calculating wrong...they pay teachers on a scale...so your calculating the base salary and I believe that might be for lateral entry teachers, b/c at step 0 they make 31k.....but then if you jump over the the "m" part, they get a 10g bump
I work with a few first year teachers and they make more than 31k a yr and that's with only a bachelors....

and I make more than that and I'm not a teacher yet...I don't know how they grade your pay...but as long as i'm making good money I don't care Chat Icon Chat Icon

well there are supplements for each degree you carry and it also varies if you get paid for 10 months of 12 months
you get the supplements right away

Wow...it's nice to see that I'll have so many new people to meet! Chat Icon

I got my teaching position pretty quickly. No, the pay is NOT what it is up here, but to me it's all relative. I could have been making over 60k here...but my mortgage would also be over 3k a month. In NC, I'll have my brand new "forever" home for much less. Plus, DH will still be making NY salary! Chat Icon Chat Icon

We'll be living in Indian Trail...about 20 min. from Ballantyne and about 30 min. from Waxhaw. Chat Icon

ok - so on step 4 (where mike would be), the 12 month pay is $2,963.33 and teh 12 month supplement is $361, so he would make $3,324.33 a month, times 12 is $39,891.96...not near $51 missy, you were getting my hopes up Chat Icon
