cheapest grocery store?
What is the best grocery store to shop at in Suffolk? Looking for good deals and money is tight.

Re: cheapest grocery store?
I think they can all be pretty expensive.
What I do to save $$$$ is plan my meals out for the week and only buy what is on my grocery list. Doing that, I can often get meals for a week for DH and I for under $30.00.
I go to Stop & Shop since they are right down the block, but I have noticed that on weekends, especially later in the day, a lot of their meat has $1.00-$3.00 off stickers on them because they are trying to get rid of it before it goes bad. I often can find steaks and chicken breasts 2-4 packs for $2.00-$3.00 each that way.
For DS, I buy him Target brand formula and diapers to save $$$$.
I also am trying to only go to the store when we really need stuff. I have noticed for awhile I would go every week just out of habit and we ended up accumulating a lot of waste that way.
I usually have a pasta night at least once a week, as well as leftover night once a week. I try to make bigger batches of stuff too so it will double as lunches during the week.
We have a garden during the summer, so I have frozen some of my veggies, and made sauce that I froze from the tomatoes.
Stop & Shop also always tends to have frozen veggies for like $1.00 each. Add some chicken and rice and seasoning or marinade and that's a cheap meal!

depends on the neighborhood really. more affluent neighborhoods charge more. you will pay more for items in a bridgehampton stop n shop than you would in a brentwood stop n shop. purely a socioeconomic situation.
And i often wonder about this. for those of you who get gas at BJs, look at the price of it in freeport, then go right to the farmingdale one on 110.
the freeport bjs always has higher gas prices... by almost five cents per gallon at times.

Re: cheapest grocery store?
Believe me, i have shopped at all of them. My DH lost his OT, and i lost my job, so i sometimes have to go for a week on 100 bucks for 5 people. It's really hard, but i have done it. I think Shoprite is the cheapest by far. I also think Pathmark is a close second, but i like the quality of shoprite better. It takes a lot of work and preparing. If you look at the circular every week, write down the next seven days, and then look through the circular for whats on sale and then plan your meals filling in each box for each day of the week it usually works. For instance, they had oven stuffers on sale for 79 cents a pound so i made that and potatoes a half a bag for 250 a 5 lb bag and a veggie. they also had the big family pack of chopmeat on sale so i bought the big pack split it in half. One half goes towards either meatloaf or chili and the other half i use for meatballs with Sunday sauce. They had pasta ronzoni boxes on sale for 79/ box. I make pasta on sunday and then i bought the linguini and made linguini with fresh broccoli and garlic since the fresh broccoli was on sale for .99 lb. So you see, it just takes a little planning. Also cutting coupons every Sunday really helps .If something is on sale and you also use the coupon for it, you can get it for really cheap. The biggest stores to stay away from IMO is King Kullen, VERY expenisve.

Re: cheapest grocery store?
Yeah, I don't like King Kullen either. I went in there to order a cake for my son because I like their cakes, and while I was there, went to pick up a few odds and ends. They have a very small selection of a couple of brands from what I saw, which ups the prices.

Re: cheapest grocery store?
I found I can find alot of great deals at Targets and Walmarts. Expensive things such as name-brand cereal and cereal bars, are sometimes half the price at walmart. I always try and buy as much there as possible.
I found some things (especially the bread) as not as fresh- I save that for the food store. IMO, I think Waldbaums has the best prices and most sales.

Re: cheapest grocery store?
So far, I think you've gotten great advice. I'd say what has helped me cut back are the following things: Planning meals in advance for the week and shopping for those things.
Making our own cookies and muffins and what not for snacks (although I do this for health reasons, it still costs so much less!)
Shopping the sales
Utilizing Target's food section.
It's absolutely mind boggling to me that things in the supermarket can be double what I pay in Target!
Oh, also, once a month, we're skipping a week of food shopping because I feel like we waste so much. Now, we're eating what we actually have. I tried this out where I just decided no food shopping for the week (except for fresh milk), and I forced myself to only make what we had, and honestly, we ate just as well as when I was constantly stocking up the cabinets and fridge. So, every fourth one of those weeks, I'll only go to the store for milk and eggs if we need and fresh fruit. Definitely saves us a ton of money!
I went from spending 150 bucks a week to now only spending 100, max. And cutting an entire week out each month.

Re: cheapest grocery store?
I go to Stop and Shop since it's right down the road from me. I have a thing to only buy what is on sale, b/c usually they have a TON of sales. I actually didn't have to go in about 2 weeks...but we are due LOL... usually we spend about 50 a week for the two of us... but DH likes to buy sooo much meat. LOL

Re: cheapest grocery store?
I have gone all over and Pathmark is by far the cheapest. They have some serious sales. Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce is $2.50 - $3 elsewhere---Pathmark has it on sale for $1.
I leave Pathmark with a shopping cart full of food for $50 or less.

Re: cheapest grocery store?
I def. think Pathmark is the best supermarket. They have great sales on cereal (ie, 3 boxes of general mills cereal for $5), canned foods (ie, 0.69 for canned vegges), paper goods. Not the best selection on produce though and I think meat is expensive anywhere you go. I find that I do well at target for milk, eggs, OJ, cheese and yogurts. I also go to Pat Farms on Merrick road in Merrick. By far the best prices on fruits and veggies. Sometimes you just have to shop at a few different places to get the best deals. It may be a PITA but if you're in the area or if the stores are close by then its worth it.
Also coupons though I find that sometimes you may buy 2 of an item b/c the coupon requires it when you really only need one.

Re: cheapest grocery store?
Here is a good site I recently discovered:
www.wickedcooldeals.com
It's good for those of you who really like to coupon, and the woman who writes the blog will also list the major sales from each grocery circular every week.

Re: cheapest grocery store?
By far, no ther supermarket has meats, fish & veggies for less than JOHNS FARMS.. yes its insane in there , but I'd rather spend $100 on meats & such that if I went to waldbaums, shop rite king kullen , it would cost me well over $400....

I personally like Shoprite and Best Yet. Pathmark is good as well. You have to shop the sales each week and stock up in order to save.

i tend to go to pathmark. They seem to always have sales and if u hit it on th right day they have a decent meat selection. I find with stop n shop there are some good deals however theres so much to choice from i end up buyin more stuff then i need. I go pathmark then walbuams then stop n shop then king kullen (kk never has sales n tends to be pricy) IMO

I go to Target because it's closer and less crowded then Wal-Mart but I've started buying my basic groceries there (i.e. milk, juice, cheese, bread) and find it's about 1/2 the cost then the grocery store by my house.
