Re: Cheese Sandwiches
I know when I was in school and I forgot my lunch money, I could only get a sandwich not a hot lunch.
I also thought it was very easy to qualify for free or reduced lunch. I wonder if people are just taking advantage of the system and figure they can't make me pay for it. It might also force people to apply for the free or reduced lunches too.

Posted by EmmaNick Just because they DON'T qualify for free/reduced lunch, doesn't mean they CAN AFFORD to send their child to school with $1.75 each day. You don't know their financial situation. That was my point.
I got free lunch in elementary and Jr. High. In High School I didn't..my mother didn't qualify. I rarely got the $1.50 it cost for lunch, nor did my sister. So I can completely understand.
I understood your point. I disagree with it.
.
I'm not sure what there is to disagree about when you don't know anyone else's financial situation other than your own.
I digress though.
You're suggesting (if I'm understanding correctly) that just b/c on paper these people can afford it maybe they can't.
I'm disagreeing with THAT sentiment.
I feel you're speculating as much as I am so what makes YOU right and ME wrong??
ETA: You're projecting YOUR situation growing up.
I'm suggesting that maybe these people are just looking for a free lunch.
Neither of us know these people's financial situation so really neither of us should speculate EITHER way.
But we will b/c that's human nature.
..because you flat out said they CAN afford it, their parents are being deadbeats. I said MAYBE they can't really afford it despite not qualifying for free/reduced lunch. It has nothing to do with *my* situation. Everything isn't as cut and dry as you seem to think it is when it comes to finances.

I agree it's not a cut and dry situation but as I'm assuming they CAN pay, you're saying they CAN'T.
I think we should just agree to disagree on the subject.

Re: Cheese Sandwiches
If these parents cant afford to send their kids to school with the $1.75 it costs for lunch everyday, then pick up a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter and make your kids lunch to bring with them! It costs MUCH less per week. There's no excuse for this non-sense. They should be greatful the school is giving their kids anything to eat at all when they owe them all this back money for lunches.

If I forgot my lunch money or my lunch I didn't eat. There was no free lunch for me.

Re: Cheese Sandwiches
At our school you get a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Last year I kept crackers and cheese at school for when one of my students didn't have lunch since he didn't like peanut butter and jelly.
If kids don't have money on their card at my school they get a giant blue sticker and a sandwich. School's are in a budget crisis too and they really can't afford to give a full meal.

Re: Cheese Sandwiches

WHY don't these kids who's parents can't afford to buy lunch get sent to school with a sandwich?? a PB&J sandwich costs pennies!

Re: Cheese Sandwiches
Sometimes being able to Afford it on paper does NOT mean affording it in real life. I know that all too well.
One time did we qualify for the free lunch and I didnt eat b/c I was too embarrassed as a young kid, b/c the free lunch kids WERE made fun of ( elementary school..once in HS...no one cared) ....
So I disagree with the " just make them deal with it " debate.
Kids are just learning social skills at these ages and the fear of being different is HUGE. I CAN imagine it really affecting them.

what is so horrible about a cheese sandwich and fruit? that meal seems much healthier and easier to digest than french fries and pizza anyways.
I have to agree this and that is what we as kids brought to school many times for lunch.
(now the pb&j on pumpernickel, well he ll that just scarred me for life)

While it does seem sad at first--at least they are giving the students SOME food. It appears that this is something that is happening after the parents have been notified that they can no longer charge the meals.
Honestly, a cheese sandwich, fruit, and milk is a pretty balanced meal considering the circumstances, its not like the kids are getting water and cracker.
At some point the schools have to do something if the costs are rising for those who aren't paying the cost of their child's school lunches.
I agree.

I think the issue that many folks have with this is that it is the kids that "suffer"-the parents either won't make them lunch or give them money for lunch (whether they can afford it or not, it's not happening)
And, it's the kid that pays the price-by eating the humiliating cheese sandwich when every other kid knows that either your parents are too poor to afford to buy you lunch or they don't care enough about you to make sure you have a lunch.
I still say when it comes to hunger vs. shame we should feed the kid, but I can understand why there is an issue with it.
