What is soo bad about getting the chicken pox?
I am really thinking about not giving this to Andrew for awhile.
How do you feel about it?

Re: Chicken Pox Vaccine...
My son got it at his 2 year visit... That's all I know. Sorry.
ETA: Reading hte following post made me remember. They did say that he may develop a small case of the pox as a reaction... And he didn't. But that was the only negative thing I remember.

Re: Chicken Pox Vaccine...
You can get a really bad case and You can die from it. You can get them in your throat and not be able to swallow . Also they can get very itchy and it is not very comfortab;le for an infant to have them...I did not like having them when I was 13. DD had no reaction to the shot and it was no that bad

Re: Chicken Pox Vaccine...
I am not giving it until my DD goes to school and has to have it. I had it at the same time as 3 of my siblings and we survived. I know a lot of kids who have had it and although it probably is uncomfortable for them their moms said they coped really well and it wasnt that much of a deal.

can I ask why?? I have heard about people have chicken pox parties where all the kids come into contact with a child who has it... I just don't understand that reasoning. I'm curious. thanks.

Because then he'll have life long immunity to it. The vaccine does not offer life-long immunity and requires boosters throughout life. Chicken pox is a mild disease and I don't see a reason to have him vaxed for it
Thanks for your response.

I'm not getting it I would rather have him catch it on his own ITA, unfortunately it is required for school.
Supposedly there is a stronger strain of CP that came over from abroad that can lead to encephalitis if untreated. This is the reason my former Ped gave anyway.

Re: Chicken Pox Vaccine...
I thought is was mandatory for school. I just had the pox in Jan. 3 1/2 weeks before my daughter was due and I was so miserable and in so much pain. On top of the thought that my poor daughter might be born with them or they may show up a few days later. You don't want your child to get them they are horrible.

Re: Chicken Pox Vaccine...
Here is my 2 cents...many children get the chicken pox even though they are vaccinated with the varicella vaccine. In my opinion, I wouldn't give my child he vaccine if they risk getting it anyway! Noah has had the chicken pox and it was gross, but he seemed to be happy in himself and it went away within a week. Even if it were offered here, I might not have my child injected with it. I think the pox are a lot worse later on in life when you are an adult.

Re: Chicken Pox Vaccine...
I still have scars on my face from when I had chicken pox.... OK, it was my fault, but how do you explain to a little kid that scratching that unbearable itch will cause a scar that you will have for the rest of your life? DC will be getting the vaccine.
WebMD on Chickenpox
Parents should not intentionally expose children to chickenpox. Some parents hold "chickenpox parties" to expose their children to children who have the illness, believing it is safer for them to have the infection when they are younger than when they are older. This is not a good idea because even young children can have serious (though rare) complications from the infection, including pneumonia or meningitis. Also, it is not possible to know which children will develop complications.

Re: Chicken Pox Vaccine...
Children CAN get the chicken pox more than once, so even if they had it already, they can in fact get it again. The vaccine does not always prevent children from getting it. As adults, the chicken pox are more severe than in a child and you can die from it. With that said, my son was vaccinated and just received the booster in January and my DD will be too.

I agree...will NOT give it to them as long as I can we never got the vaccine as a child, so now why is it necessary. I just think there are way too many vaccines given.

Re: Chicken Pox Vaccine...
DD had the Chicken pox vaccine with her MMR shot at her 1 year appt.
Chicken pox are vicious and i wouldn't want her going through that. I had mild/medium case and I was in agony. My poor DH still has scars from them, and my cousin when she had them her throat almost closed, she couldn't open her eyes cause she had so many everywhere.
Chicken pox are also extremely dangerous to catch as an adult.
Plus kids need them before school. Honestly I don't see the big deal. If there's a vaccine to keep her chances extremely low of catching it, she's getting it.

Re: Chicken Pox Vaccine...
I'm still on the fence. I believe you need it for school so it may be a mute point but...
My initial thought is no. We all had it as kids and survived etc.
My other thought is maybe?? If kids are all getting vaccinated and they are not contracting the virus then they are not passing the virus on either so my child may not get it as a child and the risk of contracting it at a later & more dangerous age is greater.
Does that even make sense???

What is soo bad about getting the chicken pox?
Children died from the chicken pox. While for some of us it was just an itchy inconvenience, it can be very dangerous as well. The CDC estimates about 100 deaths a year to the chickenpox.

Re: Chicken Pox Vaccine...
Can i just say as an adult who has had the chicken pox virus twice, once when i was 7 (and really bad) and once again when i was 28, I would not hesitate to give it to my sons. Having shingles (and i had a very minor case of it) was horrible. I would not wish that on my worse enemy. My doctor said that in the future they are hoping that shingles will be a thing of the past due to the chicken pox vaccine.
Besides having small scars on my body (including face) from the first round of chicken pox, the fanthom (sp?) pain I sometimes get in my ear is brutal. It's a result of having had the shingles.
So yes, I will be getting my boys the vaccination in the hope that they never have to go through what i did twice.
