Children Signs (autism spinoff)
i was reading the paper the other day and there was an article that talked about street signs stating:
"Austistic Child In Area"
Or something like that....
Thoughts?

Re: Children Signs (autism spinoff)
I think it's a good idea. Kinda like "Deaf child area" signs. My nephew will just start walking toward the street, no matter how many times you call his name he will not respond and keep heading for the road.

Re: Children Signs (autism spinoff)
there is a sign that says that same thing on the street i used to live on in levittown (DH's parents still live there).
i never saw the child, but i can totally understand why it would be there, as some autistic children don't respond to normal signals (honking, yelling, etc.) that would indicate they need to get out of a car's way.

Re: Children Signs (autism spinoff)
we saw one the other day. Like headoverheels said, I agree it should be due to those safety issues

Re: Children Signs (autism spinoff)
Many children with Autism have no regard for their safety. I think it's a great idea.
I can't let my son get on/off the bus alone because he will just dart into the street without bothering to look both ways, even though I've told him over and over and over and over again to look both ways. The head moves to look, but his eyes don't

Re: Children Signs (autism spinoff)
I've been seeing these signs more and more often lately and I do think that they are a good thing. I just hope people actually take a little more caution when they see them. There is one in my neighborhood and people still drive so crazy around it. It makes me mad sometimes.

Re: Children Signs (autism spinoff)
Ok...well i am the odd one out. I think i am getting used to it now LOL.
Anyway. I think that the sign is unnecessary. I mean i think that it is actually MORE likely that a normal IQ child to be running around in the street not paying attention than an autistic one.
But IMO that is besides the point. What about all other disorders. If there is a deaf child in the area is the sign going to read "autistic AND deaf child in area" ????
And how many autistic kids need to be in the area for a sign to go up? 1? 4? 10?
Don't get me wrong i understand the reasoning behind it. I just feel that it is now tooooo much. People should be driving safe because ANY CHILD/REN are in the area. What about the kid that has impulse control disorder? Or ADHD? What about mental retardation or schizophrenics? Or just plain ole hyper?
Like i said i can understand why they put the signs up. I just don't think it is necessary to say "autistic".

Maybe the parents just got the town to put the sign up around their house if their child had a history of wandering out into the street? I don't think that they will put the sign up outside of every child with autism's house...or we'd see them more frequently.

i didn't think they put the signs near the houses of the children but in the general area.
But again i am not sure what goes into the criteria for putting up a sign. I just find it odd.
Will there be a street where there is sign after sign of the different disablilities that are in the area? I mean when is too much?
And again...maybe just ONE sign that says DISABLED child/ren in area SLOW THE HELL DOWN. ???

good point. But does the sign need to say AUTISTIC? I think that is my biggest issue with it.

I would think it would go up where there is a severe case and the child is known to disregard safety. I guess it is a good idea because I would certainly be extra careful, even though I like to think that I am always quite careful.

The same reason a DEAF child in area sign says DEAF child? What else would you want it to say?

i happen to know the family in the article very well and in my opinion, yes the sign needs to say autistic.
what else could the sign say?

Re: Children Signs (autism spinoff)
silly question, but I thoguht I heard that saying "autistic" is not so politically correct, and it should be "child with autism". Just wondering if this is correct, or if it really doesnt matter.
I also hear both in the schools, so Im not sure which to think.
about the sign, I think it's a great idea. Cant do any harm, as long as the parents are ok with it.

You are right- the pc term is "child with autism", however for brevity, I think autistic child gets the point across quicker on a street sign.

DISABLED ... I don't see the need to point out that an "autistic" child lives in the area.

Why?
Perhaps if it said "developmentally disabled" but just the term disabled would probably mean to MANY drivers that a child in the area has a physical disability.
I'm really confused as to why you are so against something that is such a good thing, but I digress.

Re: Children Signs (autism spinoff)
i am not against the sign itself. I do think it is a good thing that would hopefully save some lives.
I guess, as i know i am getting repetitive at this point, feel that the word AUTISTIC isn't necessary. There are plenty of disabilities that would and could benefit from having people drive slower around. So why not just nip it in the bud and make a general statement as opposed to just saying "autistic.

I have to agree. Disabled conjures up different images in people's minds. To some, "disabled" might mean a child in a wheelchair, or a child using crutches. Saying "Deaf Child" or "Autistic Child" makes it less subjective- drivers will be more mindful of "typical" looking children who might dart into traffic (which is the reason for these signs).
Also- you do understand that these signs are put up at the parents request. It's not like "Autistic Johnny" moves in and the county puts up signs so passerbys can have a gander....
*** I know that was crass and was MEANT to be tongue in cheek for those who didn't "get it".

actually no i didn't know that it was at the parents request.
But as for the rest of the topic, i guess i will have to agree to disagree .
