Also- you do understand that these signs are put up at the parents request. It's not like "Autistic Johnny" moves in and the county puts up signs so passerbys can have a gander....

*** I know that was crass and was MEANT to be tongue in cheek for those who didn't "get it".

actually no i didn't know that it was at the parents request.

But as for the rest of the topic, i guess i will have to agree to disagree .Chat Icon

It would be against privacy laws to disclose a person's medical status, so, yes, it is at the parent's/caregiver's request.

This was on Autismconnection.com:
'Autistic Child' sign warns car drivers to slow down

ROCHESTER, Minnesota, USA: The yellow, diamond-shaped sign in the front yard of the Eberhart home has a message not many motorists have seen: “Autistic Child.”

Rochester is among the first cities in the country to make the signs available for residents who request them, and the city has only four so far.

“We hope people take it into account and slow down,” said Julie Eberhart, whose even-year-old son, Ryan, has autism and can unexpectedly run toward the street.

The city first responded to requests to post signs in 2005. Families used to need city council permission, but the city council waived that earlier this month. Now families can get them (or a “Blind Child” or “Deaf Child” sign) by filling out an application and paying a $200 fee.

Brad Trahan, whose six-year-old son Reece has autism, thinks his family’s sign does more than just warn motorists to slow down. It has also helped to educate neighbours about the boy’s autism while giving vital information that could help in case of emergency calls, Brad Trahan says. Reece, who is non-verbal, might hide in a closet and not respond to calls from firefighters, Trahan explained.

THAT I'm not sure of. Just posted the article because I thought it would give some insight into WHY they exist, as well as show they are not discriminatory but in fact are at the parent's request.

Re: Children Signs (autism spinoff)

I think the signs are great - for all of the reasons mentioned in this thread.

And, honestly, if I saw any kind of a sign about children, I'd slow down, deaf, autistic, purple - whatever! What does it matter that it says "Autistic" or "Deaf"? All the signs are doing is letting us know, as drivers, to be extra-cautious in that area.

I would gather to say the sign is in front of the house since they said it alerts the neighbors in case of emergency, etc.

Re: Children Signs (autism spinoff)

Well i have to say i stand corrected somewhat. I do feel that the sign is helpful in many ways. I just think that there are many other diorders that could benefit from similar signs as well. And maybe they will have them too.

Re: Children Signs (autism spinoff)

Perhaps there was an accident or recent issue and the county or parents felt it was best to give warning to the area. My nephew is autistic. He would have no regards to safety but at the same time if he was in the middle of the street crying someone might not understand that he needed help. Sometimes people think he is throwing a tantum and do not realize that he is not just a spolied child who wants a toy. Perhaps this sign is needed for this child. And IMO, if a parent or area needs a simple sign to help then who does it hurt? No one. But maybe it actually helped someone.

Re: Children Signs (autism spinoff)

I don't see a problem in general with signs asking people to slow down, but honestly, how many people know how to react with a child with autism? Even with all the research I've seen and read on autism, I would still instinctively honk if I saw a child in the street. There still isn't enough education for the general populace about autism. I think everyone understands that if a child is deaf, they can't hear, and if they are blind, they can't see, but I doubt the vast majority of drivers understand the issues with children with autism.

If it gives the parents peace of mind, then why not?

good point.
But does the sign need to say AUTISTIC? I think that is my biggest issue with it.

The same reason a DEAF child in area sign says DEAF child? What else would you want it to say? Chat Icon

as i said in my previous posts..

DISABLED ...
I don't see the need to point out that an "autistic" child lives in the area.

IMO there is a distinct difference in what you as a motorist will need to look out for if there is a blind person, deaf person, or child with autism in the area. For a sight-impaired child you could honk...not so for a hearing impaired child or child with autism. Also, a child with autism may appear to be "acting out" which may not be the case for a child with another diagnosis.

I think it is absolutely necessary, and I hope people take these signs seriously when they see them.

From what I know (which is limited and antiquated) you have to approach the town to have a sign erected. If the family or other interested parties have not pursued it then that could be why there is no sign.....
