Choosing a RE: Long Island vs nyc and experiences
Hi all- we just learned that we have male infertility issues (low percentage of normal sperm and viscocity). The next step will be going to a RE. We have very limited experience with RE and don't have friend who have handled this to get advice, so here I am!
We have heard cornell is the place to go but in reading I know there is more out there.
How did you choose your re? Do you go on Long Island or nyc? Do you have experience with Long Island vs nyc clinics? Any insight would be great!

Choosing a RE: Long Island vs nyc and experiences
I did my own research before choosing and I went on the ny mag doctors list and 4 doctors from this one specific practice were on the list of top REs in the tri state area so I went with that practice. I loved my dr. I choose to go in the city bc worked in NYC and it was easier to be closer to work for monitoring.

Choosing a RE: Long Island vs nyc and experiences
I chose by: Getting recommendations Looking at their statistics Their experience with my diagnosis How close to home/work for morning monitoring appointments Cost (even with insurance costs can differ by thousands)
I've heard RMA is good for male factor. I went to LI IVF but our male factor wasn't a big deal. I was the main problem. Originally I had gone to North Shore but was unhappy and switched.

Re: Choosing a RE: Long Island vs nyc and experiences
The decision on the RE we are with was based on the points below
-recommendations on here and online reviews -success rates -flexibility with early morning hours and monitoring locations near work -cost
Since my DH and I do not have IF coverage, out of pock cost was one of the major factors for us unfortunately.

We dealt with MFI and used RMA NY in the city. They have a urologist (Dr Bar Chama) on staff in the practice, so your RE can work directly with the urologist to prepare a plan for both you and your husband together. It was much easier for us that way and I felt like we got the best care possible, given our situation.

What you mrs. Who did you go with?
I'm currently on a forced break now, but I go to RS of NY.
My main doctor is Dr. Stelling, but this practice has multiple doctors that you may see during your cycle. I haven't met them all, as they rotate between 2-3 offices a week, but my favorites are Dr. Stelling and Dr. Halfan (at the office I go to for monitoring, they are the main ones there). The staff at the WI office are the BEST- so kind, caring and genuinely routing for me.

I tried an RE on the island first. He was an ass to put it nicely IMO. I thine decided since DH & I both worked int he city a place in the city would probably work better for appts. We would just hop on earlier trains.
I ended up at Columbia.

Michelle, would you share some insight into why you switch and your north shore experience?
North shore wanted me to jump into IVF after three failed iui and wanted to charge 7,000 WITH my insurance. Li IVF was going to charge 1,500 and disagreed with me needing IVF. I'm pregnant bc of them. Also, I didn't like north shores hours and even though I saw a dr each time I felt it was impersonal
Stats can be googled - I think it's SART or something. It displays success rates of each clinic

Re: Choosing a RE: Long Island vs nyc and experiences
I did extensive research in terms of statistics and reviews and choose RMA. We were under the care of Dr. Mukherjee, but all the doctors there were great. During my actual cycle, I never actually saw Mukherjee because he happened to be on vacation - oops!
Our issue was SEVERE MFI. My DH had had testicular cancer in 2003 and we were using frozen sperm - the counts, motility, etc were not good at all. Each vial contained less than 500K sperm and motility was like 1% at best pre-freeze. We do not reside in the metro NYC area and had had 2 failed IVF attempts with a clinic in our area. Both attempts produced poor quality embryos. On our first attempt with RMA, we finally got some good embryos and I am now 36.5 weeks pregnant.
I liked their attention to detail. Everything was very organized and was done in a timely manner.
If you have any questions, let me know.

I ended up PG on my own the month before my first IVF but I was happy there.
My sister used them for her DS and again for 2 or 3 failed IVFs since then.

You can find info on success rates here:
SART success rates
Keep in mind, though, that the rates are based upon information that is self reported. Also, some clinics do not do fresh transfers at all, so they can try to get as many embies as possible before doing a transfer. Success rates are based upon pregnancies per transfer, not per retrieval.
We are going with a clinic that is out of state (long story that's not really relevant here). We did meet with an RE here, but felt that he was not that interested in our case. I got the feeling that he was not really interested in working with us because we might adversely affect his success rate. I have a history of severe endo, have high FSH, low AMH and am not exactly a spring chicken.
We felt that the clinic we went with was more willing to take the time to explain things to us and to formulate a concrete plan, as opposed to just vaguely discussing our options.
Other factors that were important to us were the accessibility of doctors and nurses to answer questions and our comfort level with the doctors.
Good luck as you make your choice!

Choosing a RE: Long Island vs nyc and experiences
I have done a lot of research and read many opinions on here. I first chose RS of NY but I soon realized that practice was not the right fit for me- so I did more research and transferred to RMA in the city. I LOVE their practice and am happy with all the drs, nurses etc. They have a satellite office in Garden City and main office is in NYC. It's a little less convenient for me but it is WORTH every minute of inconvenience to be with a practice you trust and feel like youre a patient and not a number.
