Chopping onions...

what do you do when chopping onions to prevent your eyes from burning and tearing?Chat Icon

the only thing i've ever heard is to put a bowl of water next to the cutting board- that hasn't worked for me

Re: Chopping onions...

I can't do it - I buy the ones that are already chopped.

That doesn't solve the problem of how bad they are when I have to sautee them....although I have found if I saute them with peppers, its ok.

I heard of putting the onions in the freezer for awhile before cutting them. Also-burning candles.

My mom told me to leave the pipe running and I have tried it but it does nothing for me.

Re: Chopping onions...

Light a candle near where you are chopping. Also, pour lemon juice over the cutting board before you start chopping.

I've tried the water and that hasn't helped me either...
I will definitely try these other suggestions.

Re: Chopping onions...

Just wanted to add, I have this and absolutely love it. I chop garlic and onion in it when making sauce. You can chop as thick or as fine as you want...

Re: Chopping onions...

I actually run the onion under cold water after I peel it and cut in half.

Re: Chopping onions...

I know this sounds odd, but my grandmother used to put a whole piece of white bread in her mouth and let it hang out. The bread absorbed the fumes from the onion and she never shed a tear. Trouble is, you can wind up eating the bread.Chat Icon

I do that too... and also, (DON'T LAUGH!), wearing glasses or sunglasses Chat Icon it keeps the "fumes" out of your eyes. Chat Icon

Re: Chopping onions...

I can't cut onions for the life of me, and the older I get, the worse it is.

The only thing that works for me, is lighting a match, blowing it out and holding it between my lips.

The bread thing also works, but like you said, I'd wind up eating it!

It's gotten so bad, if I don't have matches I stick my face in the freezer!!

Re: Chopping onions...

The key to not releasing the stinging odor from the onion is to not cut the end with the root...

in other words...peel everything to the base of the onion and chop the onion with everything still attached to the root - as if you were husking corn...

this WORKS...when you chop the root end off you release the stining odor from the onion
