Definetly put a piece of bread in your mouth.
DH used to work in a pizzeria when he was in hs & they always did this when preparing food, IT WORKS!!!

I was going to post this last night. I was chopping up a red onion and my eye was burning non stop for the rest of the night.

I used to get so bothered by onions and lately they haven't bothered me at all. But the only onions I've chopped lately are red onions and vidalia sweet onions. I don't know if different types of onions make it worse -- when I was a kid my mom would buy them in the big 2 lb bags and those onions always made me cry.
I also have a smart chopper so if I need to chop a lot of onions to a smaller size I use that.

i tested it out last night
the running water helps alot
becasue i chopped an onion while runnig water and my eyes teared slightly
then i chopped an onion without the water, my eyes welled up extremely fast
water definitely helps
