Christmas tree question -- yes, seriously, in September...
Does anyone buy their real Christmas tree really close to Christmas? Is the selection still okay?
I am going to be thousands of miles away for a trial for work from the week before Thanksgiving until the weekend before Christmas. DH and I really love picking out our tree together and decorating it together... If we wait until the 20th to get a tree, we'll be fine, right?
I have heard some people get theirs on Christmas Eve. I've just never done it that close to Christmas before, so I wanted to make sure.
I'm trying to think of things to look forward to while I am gone, instead of all of the stuff I will be missing while I am so far away for an entire month.

DH's grandparents always bought their tree close to Christmas, and decorated it on Christmas Eve. Apparently it is a German tradition, but they do buy it a few days in advance. His grandfather gets small ones now, but I don't think they had a problem in the past.
There always seem to be trees for sale tha last week, and I always wonder how many go unsold at the end of the season.

Thanks, ladies! This makes me feel a little better.
Being away this long REALLY sucks, and being away this long around the holidays really sucks.
I like the people I work with, but not so much I want to spend Thanksgiving with them and not my family.

I usually try to find a charitable place to buy it like a fire department and their stock is usually not great close to Christmas. But the big lots usually have plenty of selection!

there is a place by me that you can "tag" your tree and come back anytime you want to cut it down. We did that one year when we knew we would be going late too.

Growing up we always got our tree late, usually a day or 2 before Christmas. I don't know where my step-dad and brothers went but they always came home with really nice trees. I am sure you will be ok!

I'm leaving before Thanksgiving, though... and pretrial work is so time-consuming I doubt I'd have time to go that early even if they are open...

Two years ago, we went 2 days before Christmas. The big name places (Lowes/Home Depot) were practically sold out, but we were able to find a great selection at the smaller family owned stands. Actually we got the nicest tree ever that year.

I've always been afraid to buy my real tree too early because then I think it's going to dry out before I'm ready to take it down. I usually will get a real tree no more than 2 weeks before Christmas, if not later. I'm sure you'll be able to find a tree you like!
