Re: Cincinnati Zoo incident
I just saw the video on the news. The animal needed to be shot. He dragged the little boy through the water. I love animals but kids come first, always!!! I don't care who is at fault. Parents , zoo, whatever just thankful that little boy is ok.
No one is able to watch a child every single second, especially if you have more than one.

A more interesting question would be if an adult knowingly jumped into the enclosure and started a fight with the gorilla, would you still save the adult at the expense of the animal? I think thats an interesting ethics discussion... but, this was a child here
See my thread "the other zoo incident" on this board. This happened the other day in Chile and two lions were killed to save the man. Terrible.

All I keep hearing everywhere is where was the mom.
What about the dad?
And that's all I have to say. It happened, it's sad. Look - so many zoos are in America. So many visitors. This is so rare. So very rare.
I was actually just thinking the same thing. Apparently we know that the mom was putting the other kid in the stroller. Where the hell was the dad???
I read he was not on the trip.

I'm seriously flabbergasted by some of the things I have read
I'm so glad so that so many can take their kids out and they never have gotten away. But you know what that's not always the case. And it happened everyday. In many places. Parks. Supermarkets. Malls. Zoos.
And according to some these people are shit parents
That's a harsh harsh statement to make. Calling all her years of parenting out bc she lost site of one while buckling. In another. Yep. Bc of this her kids should be taken away, she's a lousy parent, can't control her kids. And everything else under the sun
And as for the kid told her he was going to climb in,well my kids tell me they are going to Disney every day. Do I believe them.
She turned around he was gone. Everyone is acting like she kicked back and said ehhhh they will find him
The lack of empathy is scary. Scary bc it is coming from other mothers. Who while this may not ever happen to them, you would think they would know better than anyone how hard a job this is. How overwhelming. How things can change in a second.
But no. We shame her. We are our own worst enemy
I could not agree more. Women just suck sometimes. I am really glad I have boys when I see the garbage some of these "mothers" spew. Makes me sick. I find women like this are the ones that hit the ground hardest when they fall from grace

t. From what I read this woman was with several young children. Sorry but it's way harder to keep an eye on several toddlers than it is one toddler or a 9 year old and a 5 year old or something.
Eta - I posted this before reading the replies - but I now see several of you honed in on the same thing - that the most judgmental here likely have never been out in public managing several small children.
Ok, so even IF she has several young children. COMMON SENSE says if you CANNOT keep them safe, you do NOT need to go to the ZOO with so many young children if you cannot manage them and be sure to keep them safe. Don't go, for freaking sake. When my child was young…If I didn't think I could handle my ONE child and her safety in certain places without another set of eyes (my hubby) then I would not GO for my child's safety.
So yes, it does boil down to poor parenting choice to much of an extent. And a very precious animal is DEAD because a person who decided it was ok to go to the zoo with more kids than she could manage or properly watch or care for. Her selfish act cost the animal his LIFE, after 17 years of NO ONE else's children getting in there and getting him SHOT to death. Use the leash thing, or know what? Don't go if you don't have enough sets of eyes to watch them all and keep them ALL safe. Especially your 4 y/o who is SAYING he wants to go play with the gorilla. So yes, I do believe SHE should be held accountable for the gorilla's death.

Yep. Long gone are the days of "it takes a village" and supporting one another.
Glad I don't surround myself with people who are ready to crucify another fellow mother.
Karma is a you-know-what for those sanctimommies.

Which sucks because she was nice via the private messages we used to exchange, I think majorly misunderstood and her post taken way out of context.
I think the mother has some blame on her. There is such things as bad parenting or else I wouldn't be a parent. There is such thing as people having way more kids than they should. It's hard not to judge situations you hear, so please everyone stop acting like you don't ever judge.
I once got my ass handed to me on this site because I don't go to school bday parties and my son was going to grow up to be a monster, yet a woman's kid climbs into a gorilla pit and you are a monster if you make a judgement. The irony
I think the zoo did the right thing by killing him, which is sad for the gorilla who did nothing wrong. And I will end it with this

Cincinnati Zoo incident
I find it ridiculous that most people didn't give a shit about gorillas before last Saturday but all of a sudden they're animal activists. Next week it will be some other new hashtag.

Re: Cincinnati Zoo incident
I still can't figure this site out for the life of me. Some days judgment is ok and other days it's the devil's work. Or guess it just depends on the topic. Hear about the woman who had 11 ppl in an 8 passenger SUV? 4of her daughter's were killed. Does she get a pass too?

I saw that story today, horrific. I can't even imagine losing 4 daughters and the pain and guilt she must feel. That is completely negligent to allow 11 people in a vehicle built for 7. Beyond sad, and so senseless She knew the risk when she was piling them in the car on laps. I do think it's a different scenario than the zoo situation though.

Another poster said something similar - Hofstra maybe? - about it being human nature to judge.
I compare judging (situations like this) to eating an entire sleeve of samoas in 15 minutes.
It's human nature to do both.
It seems justifiable, somehow, while you're doing both. "Well she was wrong." or "I had a tough day - I deserve these."
They both feel good.
BUT - you poison something either way. With the cookies you poison your body; with the judgment, you poison the world around you in small but cumulative ways by bringing others down for no good reason.
It's one thing to think it. It's another to say it, especially on a public forum, where there is pile upon pile of similar comments that add nothing of value to public discourse.
So I say, the next time you (general you) think about judging someone - especially without all the facts - I suggest you think: Is there something more useful I could be doing right now? Like, painting my toenails? Scrubbing the toilet? Screwing? Anything?
Because ladies, if we put the energy that we put into this into doing something like working for paid parental leave so moms and dads could take their babies to the zoo a little more often, we'd have it done in a week.
