CIO night one...UPDATE
In the last month bedtime has spiraled out of control. My little guy used to go down awake and go to sleep but then he started rolling and then crawling and we started rocking him to get him to sleep. I knew at the time it was a bad habit, but at that time I wasn't ready to let him cry.
In the last two weeks he has gone crazy. He is inconsolable even when we rock him and it was taking us almost an hour to rock him to sleep.
So we are doing CIO. It has been 30 min and he's still going strong. My heart is breaking as I sit here but I know we need to do this.
To all the BTDT moms, how long did CIO take the first night??
How many nights before it got better.
He's asleep! Minutes after I posted he just passed out. I think it ended up being around 40 min or so. I guess not too bad since that is how long it was taking us to rock him to sleep. Now I have to decide if I'm up for doing this when he wakes up in the middle of the night.
I'd love to hear more success stories. It will give me courage to do this again tomorrow!

Re: CIO night one
First of all to you. Hang in there!
The first night we did it with DS, he probably went for a total of about 45 minutes. We checked in on him periodically as we did the Ferber method. Tore my heart out.... but 6 months later I am so glad we did it!
ETA: When we first started it, it took about 3 days for DS to get used to it.

Re: CIO night one...UPDATE
Same here it took us 3 days...first night was about 45 minutes...and he never woke up!!! You never know you might not have to do it again tonight. I feel like when they fall asleep on there own its a deeper sleep. We used to rock DS too, but CIO was the best thing I could ever do. Now DS goes in his crib awake after his bottle, i sing a song or two while he stares at me from the crib. After a few kisses goodnight, he grabs his blankey and rolls over and goes to sleep. Its a pleasure. We are both so much happier. I did it for naps too, which was easier....it only took him 15 minutes or so the first nap I did, and then it was nothing.
ETA: 2nd night of CIO was about 17 minutes, and by the 3rd night it was only 3. Occasionally he will cry for a minute or two when I leave the room, but it doesnt last.
Hang in there, you are doing a great job!!!
ETA: DS is 7 months old now....we started when he was 6 months.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My DS is 6 1/2 months. Tonight was really hard. But I talked to my doctor about it and I read Dr. Ferbers book. I think his ideas about sleep associations make a lot of sense so DH and I decided we'd give it a try. Fingers crossed that this is going to work for us long term.

Re: CIO night one...UPDATE
That's actually really great for the first night!
CIO worked wonders for us (and for my back too since I could barely walk anymore from rocking him all day long! )
