So, I am new to this district, but class mom wants $60 for the year. Isn't that insane??? I am used to $20. Is this the going rate? Not sure what to think??

Elementary or pre school? Our elementary put a cap on the collection amount across the board to avoid this

Re: Class mom $$

That is way too high. Especially this school year, when so many families are in a bad place financially due to the pandemic.

If my Principal or PTA Central Council heard that a class mom was collecting that much $, they would nip that in the bud quickly.

A request that high is totally blind to what is going on in country right now. Even in affluent communities many families are dealing with financial strain and cutbacks due to lay offs and businesses failing. $60 is half our weekly food bill so would hurt to lose if we were struggling. I would probably request a “suggested donation” this year no higher than $20.

Yes, that seems high to me, even in a regular year. Now with the pandemic, it seems even more excessive. Like others have said, I would ask what it is for. I kind of feel that kids are doing less this year because of social distancing. Are they even doing class parties and "extra" stuff? My kid is in middle school, so I'm past the class mom stage.

We're still having class parties...Friday will be the Halloween party.
But i have yet to be asked for any money yet which is strange.

$60? What are they doing with potentially over $1,000?!?!

My kids’ classes we get $150 total if we’re lucky, and always manage to do something nice for the kids on party days.

In my school though, the class fund cannot be put towards teacher gifts and I agree with that. Every student participates in the class parties, but it should be at each family discretion if they choose to give a gift to the teacher or not.

The pta sets the amount we collect. We do $20 for k-4, and $25 for 5

It covers 4 parties, teacher gifts for Christmas and end of year, and typically a basket for the gala. Last year I only had one parent not contribute. This year the other mom has the money, so I’m not sure how many we got.

Re: Class mom $$

that does sound like a lot.

if they haven't explained what all that money is for, i would ask and i would run it by the principal.

like others have said, with so many families hurting financially and so many kids not being physically in the classroom... what are they doing with so much money.

ps. my kid is 25. the last time i contributed to a class fund, the amount asked of me was $15.

That is a lot. In my district it has always been $10 for the class, and $10 for gifts... so they collect $20 total.
That being said, I was class mom last year and foot the bill for almost everything we did as far as parties. It comes with the turf.

That is a lot. Usually we pay $20. I don't think they have even picked class delegates yet. I haven't been asked for any money yet.

I would ask what the money is being used for. That is a lot of money, especially in a year where there are limited parties. In a normal year we do collect about $50 which includes, holiday gifts, end of year gifts, basket dinner contribution and party supplies. This year we are not collecting at all as we do not know the financial situations of our families due to Covid.

I think that is a bit high. I think the most I ever sent in was 25. Usually they phrase it as a suggested amount. If that's the case here, maybe they are thinking whoever can send in that amount will cover those that can't. Either way, I think that is a big ask and too high. I would just send in 25.00 in an envelope with your child's name.

My child is in K so I'm not sure what the going rate is, but there's been no mention of a class mom. I assumed they weren't bothering since we can't have any parties or celebrations. I can't imagine what that money would be used for this year.

I think that’s high but if it includes all parties and teacher gifts it’s not that bad. I’m class mom for my sons co-teach class and for teacher gifts alone (holiday and EOY) we are requesting $30. And then we need volunteers for 2-3 parties to send items in which is about $5-10 a pop... usually you only volunteer for one party but we may need some to volunteer for more.

I was class mom last year I collected $95pp which is what the board at the school recommended. It covered class party supplies, holiday gifts for teacher, assistant, music teacher and the two school administrators. Also covered the May fair which is the schools biggest fundraiser and then subsequently end of year gifts for teacher and 2 admins. So it’s 10 kids in the class gave me little under $1k and it went quick for all the events. No one cared about the amount because it was already established kind of at school and more just expected. They were in pre school Chat Icon

Re: Class mom $$

Listen, I will admit there are times I feel like telling them- just give me ONE amount, and I'll write you a check now- just to avoid the constant ask for us to fundraise, etc. I refuse to fundraise. Tell me what you need, and I'll give it to you from my own money- I'm not bothering my family and friends to buy overpriced wrapping paper and nonsense.

I feel like it isn't a lot but it seems like a lot because it is up front.

Just think about every time you need to send $5, or $9 or $20 for something, it adds up.

I actually think it may be reasonable if it covers everything for the year. While schools can't have parties, I know our class moms are still supplying crafts for each holiday. If the $60 also covers holiday and end of year gifts, then I think you got a bargain.

Sounds reasonable to me if it covers expenses for class parties and gift for holiday and end of year. Maybe they’re asking for it all up front?

It may be due to the classes being smaller so less people to collect from but the class mom may still be collecting $20 for a holiday gift, $20 for a year end gift and then $20 for crafts and such for parties.

I am the 1st grade rep, which means I'm in charge of the class moms for 1st grade. We have a set anount we can charge, IF they can afford it. $7 per child. Then, at Holiday time, we collect $5 per fmily. Some people give more, but we can only ask for 5. At the end of the year, again $5 for a teacher gift, again voluntary.

$17. Total. Yes, there's always a book fair, a pretzel sale, etc etc etc... they get nickled and dimed alllll year long, so $17 is beyond reasonable.
$60 is NUTS imo

My kids go to a PreK-8th catholic school. Typically, PreK-2nd parents can join the holiday parties. This year, obviously not. But we are still having parties. However, we are only asked for $5 at a time. We paid $5 to the class mom a few weeks ago for the Halloween party. They are not collecting for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day, and Easter yet, because we don't know if we will be remote at that point. So she said she will collect about 2 weeks before each party. But even combined that would be $25, not $60. Not sure about Christmas and end of year gifts for teachers yet. Typically the Christmas gift money is collected in November- $10 and end of year in May- $10.
