Re: Clinical Psychology Question....Need help!

Try looking in the DSM IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). I don't know if it has the answers you are looking for, but it might be a good place to start.

Re: Clinical Psychology Question....Need help!

What used to be called Manic Depression is now called Bipolar Disorder. There are two types: Bipolar I disorder and Bipolar II disorder. Within these types, there are different diagnoses based on whether the patient most recently experienced a depressed, manic, hypomanic, mixed or unspecified episode

this is right, there are no "stages" and its not called manic depressive disorder anymore. But the illness that used to be called manic depressive is now called Bipolar, and yes she can be type I.

In a nutshell, (and I am oversimplifying) but the difference between the two is that for type I manic episodes last longer than the manic episodes for type II

That's all true.
The main difference between Bipolar I and Bipolar II is the severity of the manic symptoms. Bipolar I requires a manic episode whereas Bipolar II is when a person has only had a hypomanic episode. Manic episodes are more severe and last at least 7 days, while hypomanic episodes don't impair functioning and last at least 4 days.
There is so much info out there. Definitely read up on it and check out the resources other people posted!
