I know, I know, ANOTHER election poll?? BUT this one is different, it's not so much WHO you're voting for, but more of a 'why'... I was really surprised at the percentage of people (33%) who were not voting FOR a candidate but against the other.

Are you voting FOR your candidate or AGAINST the other candidate??

I know that most of us are a combination, but I am just curious as to which is more the motivation - how much you agree with the one, or disagree with the other.

I know so many people are voting against Obama for the mistaken "he's a Muslim" or voting against McCain due to worries over Roe v. Wade being overturned or something like that.

I kept it to the 2 major parties.

I would ask for people to not get nasty, but I won't bother Chat Icon

That's an interesting poll. I feel like I used to vote "agaisnt" more than "for" but I have have changed.

I think it comes with not expecting either one to save the world. When you think like that, you end up with
"they both suck, so let me vote against A becausce of X or against B because of Y."

I think also if there is an unpopular incumbent running again, you get more of the voting against, mentality, b/c people want the old one out, regardless of who the challenger is.

I think I am thinking a little bit like that for my choice of State Senator.

Awesome poll!

And honestly, I'm kind of a combo of two choices. I'm voting for policy and because I'm against a candidate.

I would say that about 90% of me is voting for Obama because I believe he will be an excellent President.

The other 10% of me is completely, adamantly against John McCain ONLY because of his selection of Sarah Palin. No matter what happens, I'll always be disgusted by that choice when there were other Republicans, men and women, who were more qualified to be in the VP spot.

Re: CNN poll I thought was interesting, so I re-created [Poll]

I'm fortunate because, this year, I'm actually voting for John McCain because I really like him and his policies. I think he is a strong individual with excellent leadership qualities. So, I'm lucky in a sense that it has nothing to do with the other person running -- for me, it is really about MY candidate.

I think he will bring a sense of unity back to the government as well because he is pretty open-minded when it comes to embracing people and policies from BOTH parties.

You're actually what even kind of made me think to do a poll like this. On another thread (a few weeks ago) you had said you didn't want your candidate to be elected just because people believed lies about the other candidate, which got me thinking about this anyway. Then CNN had this poll which articulated what I was thinking about! Chat Icon

I agree with you. I would've been happy to see McCain as president, because in general he seems to consider issues taken one at a time and not pander to party politics. But then he chose Palin.

I agree re: McCain - I'm niether Rebulican or Democrrat - Obama is a bit too liberal for me, and I don't agree with all of his policies .....but I"m voting Obama b/c the idea of Palin scares the hell out of me - and I don't agree with ANY of hers

I have A LOT of serious issues with him - don't get me wrong. But, luckily, this year I like McCain so much that I don't have to worry about all that jazz - I can just vote 100% for him.

But yeah, I have SO many concerns with him there isn't enough time in the day to list them all.

I'm voting for Obama 'cus of his policies and am also voting against McCain/Palin 'cus I know his policies won't work in the best interest of the country.

Besides, he won't be as effective as President with the Democrats in control of both the House and Senate... ;)

This poll is very interesting.

At this time, the % of people voting for McCain due to his policies, are the same % of people voting for McCain because they don't like Obama.

While looking at the reverse - 10% more Obama supporters are voting for Obama's policies, not just because they don't like McCain.

I'd like to see what the 'final' outcome of the poll is, as our nightime posters join.

Re: CNN poll I thought was interesting, so I re-created [Poll]

I voted for McCain because I am against Obama. Honestly, I am nto a huge McCain fan, but there are things that Obama has voted for several times in the past that I just CANNOT support and will not condone in a candidate. that is why I am voting for McCain, along with the fact that overall, McCain is much more moderate and not so extreme.
