cold and rainy weekend foodies...what are you going to do with it?
so this really feels like it's going to be a GREAT cooking weekend.
I am aiming to make my famous (in my house anyway ) french onion soup on Saturday and osso bucco with risotto milanese on Sunday.
I am looking forward to being HOME with nothing more to do than to play with my two men and feed them delicious food.
we'll arrive sometime saturday late morning so I can start on the soup. not sure what I should pair it with yet though. last time I made it, I got pregnant it's THAT good.
on Sunday morning, I'd like to bake cinnamon buns for breakfast. along with a nice frittata.
then have an early supper of the osso bucco.
then maybe some homemade cocoa...with cookies? a short bread? what do you recommend? what scents will fill YOUR home this weekend?

Re: cold and rainy weekend foodies...what are you going to do with it?
I was thinking it's a homemade SOUP weekend..not sure what though..
Also, on Sunday, it's the NYC marathon and we live in LIC, so it comes right down our main street (my corner). We do a marathon breakfast day with the neighbors and then spend the day enjoying the marathon.
Making, eggs, bacon, sausage, breakfast pizza, pancakes. Crumbcake. Not sure what else.

Re: cold and rainy weekend foodies...what are you going to do with it?
I've got tons of errands to run on Saturday, so I think Sunday will be my cooking day.
Definitely a huge pot of chicken soup, portioned to go into the freezer. For dinner I have some nice beef short ribs that will be braised. Have to think about what to serve with them.
I'm in the mood to bake, have a ton of apples that my dad brought home from upstate, so I think I'll make an apple cake. I'll have to make something else for DH since he does not like fruit cakes, so maybe some peanut butter or chocolate chip cookies for him.

Re: cold and rainy weekend foodies...what are you going to do with it?
Cold and rainy = perfect fall weekend.
So far I'm planning to make: cranberry (and walnut?) scones potato (and sausage?) frittata acorn squash soup sweet potato biscuits individual molten chocolate cakes caramel corn with bacon (saw it on Top Chef and have to try it) soft pretzels
Need to do something with apples - maybe just baked with some cinnamon. Or apple chips for something a little different.
Nothing really out of the ordinary, but I need to use up a bunch of CSA goods.

I made sauce last night for pasta dinner Saturday. We'll be spending the afternoon at the vineyards for my bday so I wanted something quick and easy for when we got home.
Sunday I think I'll make BBQ porkchops in the crockpot.

Re: cold and rainy weekend foodies...what are you going to do with it?
I won't be home on Saturday.. so no cooking for me.
Sunday I should be home in the afternoon and was planning on doing a giant pot of sauce. A nice lazy sauce made with a heavy handed dose of red wine... and some for the cook as well. I'll pound out some good quality meat and stuff it with crispy fried pancetta, parsley, Reggiano and breadcrumbs for a nice bracciole. And - of course - some tender pork and beef meatballs. We'll get a big bowl of spaghetti - thick traditional style - to coat with sauce too. I'll do a loaf of golden garlic bread with some fresh garlic and butter.. a little sprinkle of fresh chopped Italian herbs. And a big salad - since tomatoes are not in season I'll take some hot house tomatoes and roast and cool them so they get that nice sweetness and a smooth texture. Toss those with some greens, a thinly sliced cucumber and maybe a sparse handful of homemade croutons.. and dress it in a fresh batch of garlic basil dressing.
I think I will make a lush chocolate cake with some saigon cinnamon and expresso for an extra oomph. It's so rich I am thinking I'll just do some powdered sugar on top with some fresh berries. Should I fill it with my homemade raspberry filling??
I guess I should call up and invite some friends for supper!

Re: cold and rainy weekend foodies...what are you going to do with it?
Well I started already today since we have a family dinner to go to on Saturday. 27 of us for dinner.
So far I made a huge pot of Marinara and the stuffing for my wild mushroom tartlets. I am in the middle of frying 9 obscenely large eggplants right now for my eggplant 'lasagna' and eggplant Parmigiana Loaf. Tomorrow I will make a Double Coconut Cream Pie.
Saturday is the family dinner, so I'll only be heating up everything I made. Others are bringing the rest of the meal.
Sunday, if we don't go to MIL's for Sunday Gravy, I'll probably make a pot of bean soup and a roast beef with mash potatoes and carrots.

Elbee - do share your wild mushroom tartlet. Yum .
Sure! They are super easy and you can use ANY mushroom you can find.
3 tbs butter 1 cupped chopped leeks (white and pale green parts only) 1 large garlic clove, minced 4 cups chopped wild mushrooms (crimini, shiytake, portobello, oyster, beech - no stems on the shiytake or oyster) 2 tbl cream sherry 24 tartlet shells (frozen aisle) 1/4 cup grated parm cheese melt butter in heavy skillet over med high heat. Add leeks and garlic. Saute until leeks are soft (4 minutes) add mushrooms and saute until tender (5 more min) Add Sherry until absorbed, about 1 minute. Season filling with salt and pepper. Cover and chill. pre-heat oven to 400. spoon 1 tbls filling into each shell. sprinkle with 1/2 tsp cheese. Bake until heated about 5 to 8 minutes. Serve warm.
*** I make the filling ahead of time and bake at 375 degrees for a bit longer to head them back up.
