Re: communion gift question

I was just wondering this. i have 30 first cousins and there are a million parties/wedding/showers coming up. I need to take a loan out to pay for these gifts. i was wondering if $50 is too cheap.
Honestly, I don't think so.

I don't either.
a communion is a RELIGIOUS event. I don't really think a "gift" is appropriate for it at all...I think something along the lines of the significance of the event is (hence the rosary)...but we are accustomed to giving gifts like that.
but I can't see ever giving a 7 year old $100 gift. his birthday was last week and I gave him $20 but he was quite happy. I'll also pick him up a soccer jersey in Italy as well, he LOVES them..but still...I don't go out of control with presents. love yes. presents no.

maybe this is what my family instilled in me b/c we were poor...
I bought my mom White Castle for Mother's Day with my communion money....but I did get my first Cabbage Patch doll as well
she bought food for the week with my confirmation money
I always watched movies like the Godfather and stuff in amazement at the parties scenes with those thick envelopes... I guess it's fairly accurate!!!

BINGO!
My nieces and nephews do NOT go without anything so IMO the love I share with them & time spent making memories what counts.
Heck, my nephew didn't even realize he was going to get gifts for his communion. When my sister mentioned that they would need to buy thank you cards for his communion, he was like "why, am I getting presents?"
God I love that kid!!!

Well, it took me 18 years to save up almost $4000 for my first used car - and I still have it. . . so not sure HOW thick the envelopes really WERE.
But what I am saying is that when I give my nieces and nephews cash - its not for them to spend its for the college fund. So, I have no issue giving them as much as I can afford.
Once I got my letter of acceptance to college with a full scholarship, off to the used car lots I went bank book in hand!

this is why we give money too. we give some cash for each "event' for their college fund. we just try to split it up, so the kids get to enjoy a part of the gift in the NOW, instead of all if it getting socked away.
but yeah, I guess I still give less than most people. I hope they can forgive me
ETA: I didn't mean to imply (and hope it was not perceived) that I think people who give more than I do are crazy or bad or missing the spirit....I was just offering up MY reason why I don't think giving less is bad.

I really don't think ANYTHING is "too cheap." Gifts are GIFTS.

I also wanted to say that I think ANY amount is very nice, not that it HAS to be over a certain amount. Just saying that I would never give a child ANY amount of money over $5 if I thought they were going to get the cash in hand.

Re: communion gift question
To be honest, I really think a lot of people way overthink gift giving. For all the major occasions for which I have received monetary gifts, the range of gifts was huge -- and I really, truly, honestly didn't think anything of it. I got everything from $25 - $500 from family for my law school graduation several years ago and similar ranges for my wedding... and ALL of that was greatly appreciated.
I really don't think there is any need for anyone to feel that they are not generous enough or too generous. Gifts are GIFTS.

I agree.
I also happen to think the whole notion of gift giving has contributed to the whole notion of needing to have a huge blow out party for every occasion.
I think it's a vicious circle...
Big party in a fancy location = I must give a big gift...

Dont feel that way! My dad went to a colleague's DC's communion over the weekend and he asked me how much to give - I told him $50; $75 if he felt generous.
