Commutes from Various Areas in Westchester and the Bronx to NYC
I'm considering a move to Westchester or the Bronx and while I have a few places in mind I figured a good way to help aid in my search I would get some info on commute times to NYC.
So can anyone tell me how long it would take (using MetroNorth) to get from the following places to Grand Central?
Tarrytown Elmsford White Plains Hartsdale Ardsley Dobbs Ferry Bronxville Eastchester Tuckahoe Fleetwood Riverdale Spuyten Duyvil
Thanks everyone!

it's not on your list but we live in pelham in westchester and my metronorth commute is approx 28 minutes (give or take a few). i also used to commute from GCT to white plains and the train ride was about 35-40. pelham is a super cute town if you want to add one more to your list!

Let's see- off the top of my head I don't recall exactly how long Fleetwood to GC is, but I bet it's about 20 minutes. The thing about Fleetwood that's probably a PITA is you may have to take the local often- I take the local from White Plains to Melrose and there are 14 stops alond the way.
White Plains, express, about 35 minutes.

Not far at all but a really easy way to figure out is just to go on Metro North's website and plug any of them into the schedule and see how long it takes to get to Grand Central. I don't think the furthest is even a half hour. I used to take it from Ossining which is above Tarrytown on the same line and that was 40 minutes.

Ooooh I will totally add Pelham to my list! I’m not too familiar with many areas of Westchester (outside of the ones I’ve listed and even them I don’t know THAT well) so when someone recommends a specific area I appreciate it!
Thanks!

Thanks for the heads up regarding Fleetwood – information like that is KEY b/c all the apartment listings say is that it’s SOOO close but they don’t give details like this so it’s really helpful to know.

Wow, yeah, this is genius; sadly it NEVER occurred to me to do that. I'm an arse!!!
Thank you for suggesting this!!!
Oh and for all three of you…what is parking like at these stations? Naturally, my first choice would be to live close enough to walk but if that’s not the case, I’ll need to drive and then need to deal with parking. How is that? I know down here it can be a bit problematic.

I'm in Hartsdale and if you take the express it puts you in grand central in 36 minutes. non-express it is about 45 minutes

Re: Commutes from Various Areas in Westchester and the Bronx to NYC
Re Fleetwood- the MetroNorth site can give you info about other trains that might not be what I call "super local"- there are 14 stops between White Plains and Melrose. For example I know there are a lot of trains that stop at Fordham, but the ones to and from my stop are VERY limited.
I don't know a lot about parking- but try the city-data forums. There are specific forums for Westchester and NYC and they get pretty good traffic.

Re: Commutes from Various Areas in Westchester and the Bronx to NYC
Fleetwood isn't always local only. I lived there for 4 years. In rush hour on the way in, the trains are usually divided up into chunks by zones.
There were trains that went from Crestwood to Mt. Vernon west, & then to 125th or GC, so it was the 2nd to last stop. It was fast, but getting a seat could be hard.
On the way back it was usually the same thing, but then it would be the 2nd stop. And it is still pretty far south, so it is the difference between 24 minutes or 35 minutes.
Elmsford- there isn't a train that goes here- not sure about buses. Depending on where you may be able to drive to a few different stations.
White Plains-this is a good stop b/c there are a lot of upper Westchester trains where the first stop is WP, so they are fast & can take as little as 31 minutes, but the extreme local train can take 50.
Ardsley- i am not sure what the deal with Ardsley is , but a lot of people take the bus to Scarsdale & Hartsdale from there. Not sure if part of the area isn't near the train or if the train is infrequent or if parking is hard.
Eastchester- This is doesn't really have a train station either. Again, it depends where you are. Tuckahoe & Crestwood would probably be your closest stations , but I lived in apart of Eastchester that had a Scarsdale address & was near the Scarsdale train station.

I'm definitely going to check out the MetroNorth site (I really can't believe I didn't think of that in the first place!) and also the city-data forums for parking.
If you don't mind me asking; do you live close enough to a station that you can walk to? I'm asking because I've checked out some places online and while they seem like they're walking distance to various train stations according to google maps they're not routes that are "walkable" for various reasons. I'm wondering is it just for lack of a sidewalk but generally speaking the street is safe enough to walk on or if it's just that it's too busy to walk on regardless.
Thanks again!!

Re: Commutes from Various Areas in Westchester and the Bronx to NYC
Some of my own info
Tarrytown - don't think many apartments are that close to the train station. Not the best walk. Not sure about the parking situation.
Elmsford - no train in this town. I used to cab it or get dropped off at WP
White Plains - my apartment was listed as 'within walking distance to metro north' - yeah, no. I don't like walking 20 minutes to the train for a night out in NYC. You have to be careful with that. There is a lot at the station (a big like 3 story garage) but you probably need a permit to park there.
Hartsdale - lots of apartments within walking distance of the train station. it's cute around there, actually. Harry's has unlimited mimosas and bloody marys with brunch on Sundays. Just sayin. There's a big lot but you probably need a permit
Dobbs Ferry - again big lot, probably need a permit. not an easy walk to/from the train station
Eastchester - no train station. you'd have to go out of Scarsdale.
Tuckahoe - lots of reasonably priced apartments in this area within walking distance to the train station

I don't- I actually start my commute all the way up in Southeast and have to change at White Plains for the local.
Good luck!

See, this is EXACTLY what I'm talking about. I try to google map each apartment to get a feel for distance to and from the local train station because you're right, I'd like to avoid having a walk like that if at all possible.

Harry's/unlimited mimosas & bloody marys. You know me too well...
Actually, Hartsdale is a recent addition as I started to notice more and more apartment listings that seemed within walking distance of the station.

Yeah, I had this issue when I was looking in the Bronxville area. Sure, it's walkable, as in thre aren't giant bodies of water blocking your way, but its's not a practical distance.
(There are places in Bronxville near the train, but all the ones I was finding were not & people lie.)
Tuckahoe isn't that big, so most of it really is near the train.
Hartsdale has a a long block that is pretty much all apartments ( East Hartsdale Avenue) that goes from the train station to Central Avenue. The higher numbered buildings are closer to the train. There are a lot of co-ops & condos though, but some rentals I believe. (I never looked for rentals in that area, just co-ops.)
Things on Central Avenue may be listed as walkable to the train, but it is a long-ish walk for everyday.
And in addition to mimosas, a Mexican place with tasty margaritas just opened in Hartsdale.
If you have any questions on specific addresses, let me know. I am pretty good with the Harlem line stops.

Yeah, Bronxville doesn't seem very walkable unless you're in the heart of the village and I haven't seen much by way of the NYTimes or MLS for rent.
Tuckahoe seems very doable/walkable and there's a good amount of shopping/restaurants, etc. around.
Pretty much all the apartments (well, co-ops/condos for rent) that I've seen in Hartsdale were listed as being on E. Hartsdale Ave and it did seem very walkable. I just wasn't sure if it was a walkable main road.
And good Mexican food and margaritas...you are speakin' my language.

Re: Commutes from Various Areas in Westchester and the Bronx to NYC
I noticed the Mexican place yesterday - totally want to try it.
On that small strip, there's also Indian, sushi, ice cream, bagels, Starbucks and Harry's. Not bad for like two blocks! And it's very walkable.
There's also a chase, Rite Aid and a small NYSC.

Ok, so between WP and Hartsdale, which has the easier commute and which would you choose based on what's around to do?

This wasn't on your list, but we know a lot of people who live(d) on Garth Road in Scarsdale. They were close to the train and there were stores close by. There are a ton of co-ops there.
I know that they were happy there, although most of them work in Westchester,

I used to live on Garth road. It was a very easy commute to Manhattan. ANd thr eis more to wlakw to than there is inhartsdale, and a lot of the storse weren't that practical. (like high end bath fixtures.)
Reasonable rentals are hard to come by though. There is one co-op building that has a lot of sublets, but there are 3 buildings that are exclusively rentals & 2 are very expensive. I lived in the 3rd, but they wre ren novating & raising rents.

White Plains has more to do--its a city--there are malls--an entire avenue pretty much devotated to eating & drinking, but the area near the train isn't super residential. There are some new luxury buildings there though.
Hartsdale is quieter- not as many stores to walk too, but you are more likely to be near the train.
They are like 3 miles apart. Train time between them is negligable, but WP has more express trains.
I'd probably vote Hartsdale if you have a car & WP if you don't.

I just meant on Garth Road in Scarsdsale, since someone mentioned it.
My rent was around that 4 years ago, but it was rent stabilized. I am not sure if that building still is & the other exclusive rentals were around $2300. I have seen around $1500 for a sublet of a co-op though.
Hartsdale or Tuckahoe would be better though. I haven't really looked at rents in a while though.

Oh ok, I gotcha.
I really wasn't considering Scarsdale, I sort of had this impression that it was pretty expensive to begin with and if you're saying you paid $1500/mo four years ago and other buildings were going for $2300/mo, then, yeah, that's way out of my budget..high end bath fixtures and all!
I definitely like Tuckahoe and Hartsdale. I'm particularly fond of the village Tuckahoe has. I like having shopping and stuff like that in walking distance. I know White Plains is a city but what's Hartsdale like?

E Hartsdale Ave is way more low key than what you've seen in WP. Smaller, things closer earlier, etc.
WP is just super convenient.

Is E. Hartsdale Ave all there is to Hartsdale in terms of shopping, restaurants, etc? Is there an actual town center?
I get that it's smaller than WP but I do dig on the fact that WP has so many places to go to (ie. shopping, eating, etc.)
Tuckahoe seems to be similar to WP but on a much smaller scale.
Also how far (driving) is Tuckahoe from WP?
