Composite Deck (Trex, etc)

I'm beginning my research on replacing my existing wood deck either this year or next.

I know I want composite decking do to low maintenance. I understand the cost is higher, that it can get hot and it can fade. My parents have had theirs for 10 years now and it's held up pretty well.

Has anyone done theirs on their own? My husband and FIL are handy and we are considering this option. If you have done a deck on your own, where did you purchase the materials?

If you used a contractor, how did you go about choosing one?

So far I have only gone to Home Depot to get some prices. I started a spreadsheet with the price per foot.

Any help is appreciated.

My BIL is in construction and he built his own deck (composite decking). I believe he got the materials at Family Lumber in Bethpage. I'm no help with cost though!

We did it on our own.

We got the actual decking from Home Depot or Lowes, I forget which. We opened a credit card so we got a certain percentage off.

Note, it fades A LOT. You may want to get a darker color than you are thinking of.

Also, it is not 'no maintenance'. You need to scrub it down yearly to cut down on mold growth. But that is much easier than staining a wood deck yearly.

Lowes is great with decking materials.Contractors tell me that their Lowes brand is even better than Trex esp it being a bit cheaper.

Just be careful with darker colors if the deck is exposed to direct sun. The deck will be too hot to walk on with bare feet.

I power wash my parents and use simple green on the railings. At the time they got theirs, only Red was available and you can tell where things are left stationary.

I'm aware, my parents have had theirs for over 10 years. My wood deck gets too hot to walk barefoot at times as well. By 3pm it's shaded.
