Conspiracy Theories
I’m so perplexed by so many things surrounding Covid-
Why do people not understand that the purpose of wearing masks is to stop droplets? Have these people ever sneezed before?
How do people believe that the world came together to fake, or vastly over exaggerate, a GLOBAL pandemic to influence the American election in November?

Re: Conspiracy Theories
Lots of conspiracy theories are fuelled or started by extremists. If you look up some of it, you see that a lot comes from the same sources. Holocaust deniers, anti science people, people who say that atrocities like 9 11 or Sandy Hook never happened and we saw character actors. Claims that people and forces are out to get us. Claims that alternatives to science and medicine should supplant them. So much more.
And weak minded, ignorant people spout and repeat these things, often chiding people for not "doing their research," when that would consist of using Google to find extremist, discredited, sometimes criminally prosecuted people's altered truths on websites and videos and completely eschewing reason, science, and training. The irony is that if these people did actual research, they would see that the sources of what they are spouting are often discredited, antisemitic, etc.
The nonsense that has permeated the internet over this pandemic is a new kind of stupidity, because it sows division among Americans and encourages people to act against both their own and others' interests. If foreign bots wanted to interfere with and harm us from within our own society and poison our society to ensure maximum damage, they couldn't have found better things to say and implant in people's thinking.
It's all disgusting.

Not a clue. But I have noticed the more uneducated the person is, the more they don't believe in Covid- not in all cases, but a lot. I never did realize how many people do not believe in science, that has been eye opening. So if covid disappears in November because it was a hoax, will be my cousin rise from the dead? I mean that would be awesome. (Being sarcastic in case it doesn't translate)

Conspiracy Theories
It has become political, and happens to be an election year. In America, people (Politicians) are using this as an opportunity to either point fingers or take advantage of the situation. People are digging for reasons to either find it to be a hoax for political reasons or the other extreme, the end of the world for political reasons. It’s a real sh!tshow right now bc of politics.
We are a country so divided that we are arguing over a virus. It’s a scary virus and I feel like because of politics there were many mis steps due to BOTH sides. I’m so disgusted with our country and what the far right and far left are doing to us.

Conspiracy Theories
These drive me nuts. I'm not one to think the govt is completely honest and never hides things from us but some of what I'm seeing on FB is just nuts. I have one friend who is an RN and has been posting all sorts of conspiracy theories this entire time. She also posts repeated anti mask articles from "scientific" sources claiming how useless they are. I just roll my eyes.

Re: Conspiracy Theories
Our education system has failed us. In the year 2020 we still have among us people that exist in the dark ages. There are people that deny science, deny medicine, deny the existence of dinosaurs, deny evolution, actively fight to have science removed from curriculum, believe evolution should be replaced by creationism in textbooks, deny evidence that earth is not flat, show up in a cape and armed to save imaginary kids from pizzagate and believe crisis actors are involved in every shooting, spew anti-vaccine propaganda, 9-11 didn't happen, etc. And now they're coughing and spitting on people. These are the stone age cave people we need to rely on to have a modicum of intelligence and common sense to do the right thing during a pandemic. But it's ok because they have essential oils. God help us all.

Re: Conspiracy Theories
People are uneducated, they choose to believe only their confirmation biases, they stick to only people who think like them, and the rise of social media.

Re: Conspiracy Theories
I know someone that is convinced everything happening right now is all because pizzagate is real. Celebrities and rich politicians are all in on a huge sex trafficking ring that also uses children to farm adrenochrome. Trump is close to exposing all of them, a lot of high profile people have already been arrested (they just haven't told us yet), and once they arrest the people masterminding the entire operation, it will all be over and we can go back to normal. The reason why Covid was released is to prevent groups from gathering, if they can keep everyone inside and separated, there won't be any mass shootings that the media can use to distract the masses and the people responsible for pizzagate will finally be served justice.
There are people that actually believe this shit. They use Trumps vague tweets as proof. So bizarre.
Edited for clarity, not that any of it makes sense anyway lol

I agree 100% with this. And it’s a sad state. People believe things easily out of fear. There are people who blindly follow government and others who believe they are out to get us. Then there’s most of us (on here) who stand somewhere in the middle. I believe there will be a vaccine soon but won’t be first in line to get it. That doesn’t mean I don’t believe in science, it just means I don’t trust they know enough about the virus or this vaccine they are racing to make to put it inside my body. Middle ground.
I see it all day on SM. One side or the other. So so soooo one sided. zero ability to try to even understand where they may be wrong in something. I just unfollow and move on with my day. I feel for them. I really do. They are so afraid they make sh!t up to be able to deal day by day. Scary

Conspiracy Theories
People believe everything they see on the Internet and do no fact checking. I am big into finding reliable sources probably because I teach my science students to do so.
My mom literally told me she believes everything she reads on the Facebook. I told her she really needs to fact check. She had no idea what I meant. She posts articles that are 5 years old and thinks they are happening today. She doesn’t even check dates. She’s in tons of groups which are echo chambers and just further reinforce her beliefs. She luckily actually believes in the virus and the importance of masks.

Re: Conspiracy Theories
i have tried really hard to not "unfriend" everyone who has a different opinion than me. i didn't want to be a person who only associates with like-minded people, so i put up with a lot of the BS for a while. when the BLM protests started, i just couldn't any more. i started slashing.
but...
yesterday, i saw someone post a list that read "it's only..." it starts with it's only a piece of fabric it's only for two weeks... etc, etc the list then jumps to all sorts of crazy sh!t about freedoms and abortion and other stuff i can't remember.
i usually keep my mouth shut. i couldn't take it any more and i called her out on it. her reply was "it's just a thought and a different perspective of the world that needs to be considered." LIKE WHAT THE FUKKK??? really?
what is wrong with people??

I have a woman on my facebook feed and she is CONSTANTLY posting alerts and articles about missing children. And when you click the link it takes you to the article and it has been updated saying- this child has been found safe. So she isn't even looking at the article, just reposting a link. And sometimes they are years old. Like from 2012. And people will comment and tell her as much. But she ignores them and continues to post. It's maddening.

I'm not even referring to a future vaccine for covid. I'm referring to people who spew propaganda against every existing vaccine.

For those people, it’s just their way of life in general. Today’s climate didn’t make them that way. It’s business as usual. The earth can heal all. And to each their own with that. But for public safety, you may be living in your own bubble forever.

Conspiracy Theories
I'm not sure if it is necessary a conspiracy theory. I keep seeing people on FB mention our immune systems weakening because we are staying inside. But that's not how our immune system works. Your immune system doesn't forget how to work. We are staying in to avoid COVID. If you go out (and I'm over generalizing here) you are going to be exposed to COVID and unfortunately your immune system probably be able to handle that and you will get sick.

They thrive in spreading misinformation. Conspiracies like the pandemic is a cover for implanting microchips through vaccines? The current climate doesn't help their rationality at all for sure.

Re: Conspiracy Theories
I am just appalled at the direction this country is taking. If you asked me 4 months ago how this pandemic would play out, never in my wildest dreams would I have said "oh 1/2 this country is going to kill the other 1/2". But thats exactly what is happening with a great percentage of non-Ciovid believers who drank Trump's Kool-Aid and think the virus is no worse than the flu and not that serious. It also shocks me that people are attacking others just because they wear masks, and that store/restaurant owners are being bullied in certain towns because they are enforcing social distancing/mask rules. WTF is wrong with people?
It pains me to read the news now because what I read depresses me to such an extent that I feel like humanity is really a lost cause. I understand now why great empires in history have fallen (ie Ancient Rome, Greece, etc). It is because of the rott coming from the inside. This pandemic has only added fuel to the fire of every weakness America has, especially in health care and social/economic inequalities. I wake up every day wondering what is happening to our country, and hating the fact that the direction its taking is a dark path because of the horrendous leader sitting in the WH.

Not gonna quote bc it’s a lot. But it’s not just those who are drinking the presidents kool aid or any other political reasons. People have been weirdo conspiracy theorists for way long before him. Sandy hook? Do you have any idea how many people STILL think that was a made up story? You’d be surprised
People believe what they believe regardless of who sits in the WH
I have SM friends, who sit on either side of the political fence who believe in the micro chip vaccine theory. Everyone makes it political (as a couple of us mentioned earlier) and it’s not

This is very true. Conspiracy theorists have been around for a long time. With the advancement of social media, it's just a lot more apparent now. The 9/11 conspiracy has been going on since it happened and that was 20 yrs ago. Flat Earthers have been around forever. Some of the videos uploaded to youtube were filmed 30+ yrs ago. Not to mention the moon landing conspiracy and the people who though the world was ending with the Mayan calendar. Tin foil hat is a term that dates back to 1926. I really don't think this is something can be blamed on a President.
