Re: Conspiracy Theories

I am just appalled at the direction this country is taking. If you asked me 4 months ago how this pandemic would play out, never in my wildest dreams would I have said "oh 1/2 this country is going to kill the other 1/2". But thats exactly what is happening with a great percentage of non-Ciovid believers who drank Trump's Kool-Aid and think the virus is no worse than the flu and not that serious. It also shocks me that people are attacking others just because they wear masks, and that store/restaurant owners are being bullied in certain towns because they are enforcing social distancing/mask rules. WTF is wrong with people?
It pains me to read the news now because what I read depresses me to such an extent that I feel like humanity is really a lost cause. I understand now why great empires in history have fallen (ie Ancient Rome, Greece, etc). It is because of the rott coming from the inside. This pandemic has only added fuel to the fire of every weakness America has, especially in health care and social/economic inequalities. I wake up every day wondering what is happening to our country, and hating the fact that the direction its taking is a dark path because of the horrendous leader sitting in the WH.

Not gonna quote bc it’s a lot. But it’s not just those who are drinking the presidents kool aid or any other political reasons. People have been weirdo conspiracy theorists for way long before him. Sandy hook? Do you have any idea how many people STILL think that was a made up story? You’d be surprised
People believe what they believe regardless of who sits in the WH
I have SM friends, who sit on either side of the political fence who believe in the micro chip vaccine theory. Everyone makes it political (as a couple of us mentioned earlier) and it’s not
This is very true. Conspiracy theorists have been around for a long time. With the advancement of social media, it's just a lot more apparent now. The 9/11 conspiracy has been going on since it happened and that was 20 yrs ago. Flat Earthers have been around forever. Some of the videos uploaded to youtube were filmed 30+ yrs ago. Not to mention the moon landing conspiracy and the people who though the world was ending with the Mayan calendar. Tin foil hat is a term that dates back to 1926. I really don't think this is something can be blamed on a President.
They have certainly been around for a while.
I have a friend who reshared a Sandy Hook conspiracy theory several years ago. It showed an image of the principal and something about how she was still alive. It made me nauseous. I texted her about it and addressed it directly. I somehow swallowed the real words I wanted to say ("have you ever heard of photoshop, moron?") She ended up deleting it but it took awhile and I still don't quite see her the way I did before that.
However, I think it's more than fair to say Trump stokes the flames of such theories and that his followers are much more likely to believe them than those who don't support him. And I'm going way back even before his presidency (Obama's birth certificate nonsense.)

Lots of conspiracy theories are fuelled or started by extremists. If you look up some of it, you see that a lot comes from the same sources. Holocaust deniers, anti science people, people who say that atrocities like 9 11 or Sandy Hook never happened and we saw character actors. Claims that people and forces are out to get us. Claims that alternatives to science and medicine should supplant them. So much more.
And weak minded, ignorant people spout and repeat these things, often chiding people for not "doing their research," when that would consist of using Google to find extremist, discredited, sometimes criminally prosecuted people's altered truths on websites and videos and completely eschewing reason, science, and training. The irony is that if these people did actual research, they would see that the sources of what they are spouting are often discredited, antisemitic, etc.
The nonsense that has permeated the internet over this pandemic is a new kind of stupidity, because it sows division among Americans and encourages people to act against both their own and others' interests. If foreign bots wanted to interfere with and harm us from within our own society and poison our society to ensure maximum damage, they couldn't have found better things to say and implant in people's thinking.
It's all disgusting.
I had someone telling me she’s finally doing her research on this stuff and proceeded to send me YouTube videos to try to convince me of these conspiracy’s. She kept telling me to stop watching main stream media and do my own “research”. I finally asked her to stop because YouTube videos are not research the worst part is she is educated. The last 4months made me realize how our education system has failed us!

Conspiracy Theories
When you have leadership that believes conspiracy theories and starts his own (9/11, anti-vax, fake news, etc.) he legitimizes it for the populations that buys into it. It’s an authority figure validating it and deepens their belief in them.

Exactly and sit with a teenager and you will see it has nothing to do with politics. They are the biggest conspiracy theorists out there.

This right here. He has given us all 1000 examples of how incompetent of a leader he could be, but this pandemic should have been the opportunity for those who are still left supporting him to see him for who he truly is. This POS is the reason for all of this chaos and confusion over the last four years, end of story.
I can't wait for Biden to come in, cut the fat in the white house out, and make things happen for us.... and for his wife, a REAL first lady, to make some real positive change in education for all of us educators victimized by Betsy DeVos.
Sorry, I had to go there.
