Controversial question... but I truly want to hear opinions
OK, so I posted an article earlier today about a 10 year old girl in Idaho who just delivered a baby because she was raped. It is a truly heartbreaking situation IMO.
I happen to be pro-choice and in this situation can't help but think that an abortion should have been an option for a 10 year old child. I do not believe that a 10 year old child should have to go through that adult situation.... JMHO.
To all the pro-lifers out there... I am really curious to know your thoughts on this. Would you ever find this scenario an acceptable reason for a girl (I will not call her a woman) to have an abortion? Or would making this situation an exception mean that you are pro-choice? I am really asking because I want to know thoughts from others who may have different opinions... not in any way to cause controversy.
(I would hope that I can get some honest answers without this thread turning ugly in any way just because I know this is a touchy subject for some.)

No, I really would like to hear from you. I guess you are saying that if you are 100% pro-life, it does not matter what the situation, abortion is never, ever an option. Since I am pro-choice, I wasn't completely sure about the other view point!
I do not judge anyone else for having a different opinion from mine... just like I would not want anyone to judge me for having my opinion!

Re: Controversial question... but I truly want to hear opinions
Likewise about PC...she's a kid. I'm sorry, but to say a baby's life is more important than this little girl's life is ludicrous. Sorry if I offend anyone, it's just my opinion, but I could not justify encouraging this little girl to give birth to a baby because of any reason, God-like or not. SHE is still a baby.
ETC: an 'unborn' baby's life.

Re: Controversial question... but I truly want to hear opinions
Not sure if I should be answering this as I'm pro-choice, but here it goes...
She should have the option of getting an abortion if she wishes.
I recognize that a 10 year old is not adult enough to make that decision but she's also not adult enough to raise a baby. I'm on the fence about who gets to make that decision. Hopefully it would be a mutual decision by her parents & her (having followed the case so this is assuming her parents were unaware a rape took place & were not in any way responsible for it).

Re: Controversial question... but I truly want to hear opinions
This is a tough one...I need to know a little more info. before giving an opinion.
Was the rape not reported right away? I am assuming it wasn't reported right away b/c I would hope if it was they would have given her the Plan B pill at the hospital. Do you know how far along she was before finding out she was pregnant?
ETA: It's kind of a lose, lose situation. If she had an abortion, a baby would obviously be losing a life. On the other hand, she had the baby, and in a sesnse has lost a huge part of her life. She was traumatized by not only being raped, but also by carrying a baby for 9 months and giving birth at such a young age when she was obviously not mentally or emotionally prepared.
I am pro-life but in this case, not sure if it was the right decision.

Re: Controversial question... but I truly want to hear opinions
I'm pro choice and i can honestly say she is way too young to have a baby especially if it was from a rape assault. I think her parents should make that decision for her, but what how would her life turn up if she actually has this baby, is it even naturally possible for her to be able to deliver and not have complications or even die?

I'm pro-choice so I won't weigh an opinion here. However, I was thinking the same thing. I thought that even though her reproductive system was mature enough to conceive, isn't it dangerous for this really young girl's body to carry and deliver the baby? This would be one other aspect that would need to be considered..not just any of the psychological ramifications that come with rape as well as being a mother at such a terribly young age.

I am pro choice as well - I had know idea that a 10 year old girl could even get pregnant (i guess i am naive) - on top of that this was obviously a rape. what i don't understand was why this wasn't reported earlier - this whole story baffles my mind. I think that no matter what decision was made = this little girl is scarred for life and is and will be in great need of serious therapy.

I have to disagree. I am very much pro choice but I also have a 10 year old. From my perspective a child that age can't make that decision and in my opinion it would be burdensome to even ask her to. Agree or disagree, in that situation my only concern would be for my baby and I can uneqovically say that my 10 year old would never give birth.

Re: Controversial question... but I truly want to hear opinions
In this case, I would be for abortion. And ONLY because I would not want that baby to grow up and find out it was a product of a rape. Can you imagine the pain that person will go through thoughout their life? Even if he/she were put up for adoption I would say the same. If I were adopted I would want to know my roots and to find that out (that I was a product of rape) that would just ruin my life IMO.
Had the girl at 10 years old had sex with someone and happened to get pregnant, well then she should just have the baby.
I want to add this is the only instance I am for abortion. It is not the babies fault that this happened but I would not wish for them to suffer internally for the rest of their life.

I would imagine that as long as a girl starts getting her period, she is capable of being pregnant. Years ago when I taught 3rd grade, one of my students came up to me and told me she got her period... she was 8! I almost fell off my chair! Girls today are getting AF younger and younger... pretty scary especially when there are horrible perverts out there in the world who would rape a child. (insert vomit icon here)

And I think you answered my original question. I assume from your answer that you consider yourself pro-life, but would make an exception about abortion in this horrible instance.
Although I am thinking that not all people who consider themselves pro-life would make any exceptions. Just comes down to personal opinion I suppose!

Hmmm thats a toughie! It's hard....I do consider myself pro-life, yes. I am just trying to picture myself in that 10 year old situation...it is a really hard question.

Yeah, it is a hard question. That's why I think there should be a category in between pro-life and pro-choice. I consider myself pro-choice because I have to... the other option would be to never allow abortion at all. I do not believe abortion should be used as a form of birth control, but feel it should be legal for those horendous situations where someone is raped or a mother's life is in danger.
Unfortunately, the only 2 choices force us to align with one side or the other, even thougth we don't totally agree with either one! Life man, it's full of tough questions!

Re: Controversial question... but I truly want to hear opinions
I used to be pro-choice until I went through pregnancy and realized that life does begin, IMO, at conception. Ask a woman who had a miscarriage at 6 weeks if she doesn't feel as if she lost a baby and I guarantee you that in 95%+ cases she will tell you she lost a baby. I now consider myself pro-life except in cases of rape. I feel that no matter what the age a girl or woman who is raped should have a choice.
A woman who is raped should not be forced to carry a baby that is not wanted. Yes it still is a life that would be lost but I think in most cases it is for the better for everyone if the woman can make her own choice.
In this case it would have to be the parents choice since the parents are trusted to make the best choice for their child. Fortunately I think this is a very isolated event and it is not at all common. I truly think that none of us could really know what we would do until we are in the position. I hope for all of us that we are never put into the situation.

the first disturbing thing is - are girls really getting their periods at such a young age now???! I didn't get mine till 13.
the 2nd and most disturbing thing - the rape
the 3rd - I can't believe her parents would ALLOW her to carry and deliver a baby at 10
sad and so very SICK!!!!!

Re: Controversial question... but I truly want to hear opinions
I m on the fence about answering this---i have drama... I decided to... I do not think I believe in abortion...that being said...in cases of birth control---(I know someone who had 5 because she obviously didn't learn... I do not think I believe in it in cases of rape. I worked with a girl that wasa product of rapeand let me tell you she was one ,messed girl... if***you carrry the baby and never ever ever tell the child she was aproduct or rape then ok...but this girl was told,I dk if that was necessarily the right thing by this girl. She had a very rough life...especially when her mom and her came face to face with the rapist in a deli.
I do think in cases where the baby wouldbe severely deformed and their life would be test after test and pain and torment its not humane...jmho...
that being said... I KNOW in my opinion I could never abort a baby with a minor disability or something where they can live a long life...or downs... after 8years of infertility and then being blessed whowould I be to say ok--this baby is not perfect I am having a abortion?
now.. 10 year old...yes...I believe there are exceptions...geez..#1-she was raped...#2--I cannot imagine her being able to bond like a mom can. Ten year old still have nightmares and want their mommy..I cannot fathom them having childbirth or exams...or anything...how traumatic and sad... this being said..I think its oneof these things that are hard to answer unless you are in the situation. I can say...I kindof understand...andno way would I expect my dd to carry a product of rape if she chose not to... Then again..at her age can she even make a decision?
