It's unfortunate it ended this way. If only he had reached out...to somebody...anybody.

If only the NYPD had reached out to him instead of using him as a scapegoat.
This is an absolute tragic loss and my heart aches for his wife and children.

ITA with this!!!!
I feel horrible for him and his family and I think not only the fact that in a sense he was responsible for another's death but also that the NYPD was making an example out of him is what led him to suicide.
He is not the only police officer who is being held accountable for this. he is not the one who used the taser, he gave the command. They were also trained that they do not have to deploy a bag (kind of like a blow up mattress) to catch people who are going to be tasered if it is less than 10 ft. The leutenant did follow proper protocol the way he was trained...and yet his guns, pension and job were going to be taken from him. He was also going to have files charged against him and probably end up in jail....which is why he killed himself. At least nowhis family will get some $$$.
The man obvioulsy felt responsible and maybe it was not the rigth call...but they could have forced him to take an early retirement or put him on desk duty and than re-evaluated the NYPD protocol for taser use...instead they dragged his long career and name through the mud.

Re: Cops are human too..just heard breaking news..
and what people also forget as they drag police officer's name, or jobs as a whole, through the mud, is that we are more accountable in our jobs than any other. every thing we do, we are on tv and in the papers, being criticized, how we should have and could have done xyz. people DO forget that we aren't machines and we have split seconds to act. most of us make our decisions with the best of intentions, sometimes it ends well, sometimes it doesn't. i was at a job not too long ago where there was a man dangling from the roof of an apartment building, about to kill himself. we are not supposed to help that man, because as patrol cops, we aren't *trained* in that. if we tried to pull him up, and failed, we would probably lose our jobs. but if we stood by waiting for ESU and the man fell to his death in the meantime, what do you think the media would have said then? we pulled him up and got him to a hospital for a psych evaluation. it never made the news, because it ended well. it's tiring, having the public second guess every decision we make. that lieutenant, did his job with the best of intentions and now he is gone, his life ended in a tragedy because of this job. because when our decisions don't end well, it doesn't matter what we did our entire career before hand... it matters what everyone watching will say. and they will drag your name through the mud. everything you spent your life working for gets taken away. you lose your pension, your benefits, your job. most people don't have jobs like that. a mistake is a mistake, it doesn't cost you your entire life. people should remember things like that, when a story about cops is on the news, and they begin to judge. to his family at home, and at work- who stood beside him every day.
