Cost for termite treatment? And who?

I don't know if I even have them. Today we found, outside, what looked like small piles of black sand. If you looked closely at it, you could see that they are little tiny bugs moving around. They are too small to even make out what they look like. They just look like black specks. My sister thinks they are termites. So now I am looking into treating for termites. AND, if they aren't, will the exterminator be honest and tell me they aren't, or will they really push to sell me a pricey termite contract? Can I just have him treat for them now, for the time being, or do I have to get one of the baiting systems? We REALLY don't have $1k+ for this.

Finally, other than Terminix, Arrow and Suburban, can you recommend a company to call that may be less $$$?

WE had a new system put in a few years ago and I do not remember it being that much money.

We pay about $300 each year for our service contract and they come 3 times (or more if needed) to check the traps and add poison to it if they see some hits.

We actually just used Suburban for carpenter ants. We thought they might be termites. When we talked to the exterminator he told us they charged anywhere from $1500 and up for our size home.

Maybe the bugs you saw outside weren't termites. Did they have wings? I remember my parents having termites when I was a kid and they actually almost looked silver/grey because of their wings. You can always check online and see if you can locate they bugs you saw outside. Suburban has pics of pretty much all bugs in our area.

The people we bought the house from already had a terminix plan in place when we moved in, otherwise we would have used Brennan. They were somewhere between $300-400 for installation and reasonably priced after that.
