Counter Top
DH and I are in the final stages of our kitchen gut/reno. The last piece of the puzzle we need to decide on is the counter top. We were originally going to go with Granite, but now DH is hearing good things about Quartz. I don't even know how to pick between the two or even color! I have an idea of what I want, but it's so hard to visualize without seeing it all together with the cabinets and the tile! HELP!

So what is the biggest difference? Because, honestly, I'm not sure I love the colors of the Quartz i've seen available... but if there are specific reasons it's that much better, that trumps color.

We are using quartz for our reno.
I think the biggest thing is that you can beat the crap out of quartz and not worry about it staining/cracking/otherwise damaging. For instance, you could take a pot of scalding hot water and place it right on the quartz surface--no need to put down anything.

quartz is more durable than granite. It won't scratch or stain the same way granite can.

I LOVE houzz.com!!!! I'm in the final final stages and I have to pick out a counter soon. I really love the idea of the quartz being more durable but so far I haven't found a color scheme that I really really like. It's something I don't want to regret picking.

i posted on here a few months ago and got some insight on quartz which led me to research it more and ultimately decide on quartz over granite
here is a link to the thread
we got cambria quartz for i believe $63 a sq foot
it got installed yesterday - but i havent seen it yet.
we picked our color by looking at the cambria quartz website...then we went to a store and saw it in person
eta - the store actually ordered us a sample and allowed us to take it home with was SO helpful bc we were able to hold it up to our cabinets, tiles etc

It's much more eco-friendly than granite (Cambria is made in the USA, so minimal shipping involved, plus they use eco-friendly construction methods).
It's much tougher than granite, and if you get one of their newer styles, it looks more like granite than some granite does!

We have Buckingham. It's got lots of variation, interesting patterns and colors, etc.

We have Cambria quartz as well, in the color Bellingham. I LOVE it, it is not uniform at all, it was designed to resemble the look of granite. It's supposed to be very durable but we've only had it for a weeks, though. It cost about the same as the high end granite that I liked.

The whole sealing and staining of granite is pretty overblown. A lot of granite doesn't need a sealer, and staining is not an issue.
if you actually do seal it, it really is wiping it down with a sealer similar to just cleaning the countertop
Only the really fragile and porous of the "granites" are real problems
I personally like granite better. The quartz patterns are too uniform for me.
Quartz may be cheaper than some granites, but on a whole Granite is cheaper than quartz. I paid around $38 per square foot for my granite.

This is exactly what I thought, and honestly, the Quartz is looking more expensive (from what I see) since we are going with Lowe's (they're doing all the rest of the work, just easier for us to have it all uniform). I wish I could pay $38/sq ft, but it's looking more like $60... but that includes the installation and a sink.

I love my quartz countertops.
Easy to keep clean, looking like new.
A joy to roll out dough on.
4 years, and no scratches, dings, pits.
I also have the Cambria brand, Victoria is the pattern I chose.
When you go shopping, take a sample of the door, your flooring and backsplash, and paint color with you.
This way you can get a really good visual on how the colors/patterns work together.

I've seen a lot of granite patterns that are very uniform, and I've seen a lot of quartz that is not uniform at all. It depends on the slab of granite and the brand/line of quartz. With today's quartz, you can't make that generalization anymore, just like the generalization about sealing granite. A lot of things have changed over the years.

We have quartz in our bathroom and love it-it's white with veins, and even with makeup no staining, and easy to clean

We actually split the difference and did a granite countertop on the center island and then chose a coordinating quartz for the countertops around the perimeter. I absolutely love it!
