Couple of newborn questions
1. does your newborn (or did you NB) hate the changing table? OMG he gets into a full force frenzy when being changed. Esp in mid of night
2. DS will take a great 3-4 hr nap during the day but in mid of night, 2 hrs MAX. Not to mention after i feed him in mid of night- his eyes are WIDE open. In daytime, after a feed, he is fast asleep before his mouth comes off my boob.
thoughts on any of this?

Re: Couple of newborn questions
I don't BF so I can't answer #2, but I can help with #1. My DS HATED the changing table. You would have thought we were hurting him. By about 3 months of age, he did a 180 and now he loves it! He giggles and laughs while we change his diaper. It does get better!

Re: Couple of newborn questions
He probably has his days and nights mixed up. Just try to keep it dark and quiet at night when you are feeding him and it will get better eventually.
As for the changing table, DD always loved it so I cant help there. Maybe he is cold?
DD hated being cold and would flip out if she wasnt covered up.

Re: Couple of newborn questions
My DD loves the changing table and has since the beginning so I can't really help with #1.
I can tell you that my DD was similar at night. The day night confusion is the worst in the beginning. I would wake her up to feed every 3 hours on the dot during the day to help her learn that days are not for long stretches of sleep. Nights are. At night, I didn't talk to her or make eye contact during feedings. I would read cnn.com on my blackberry and still do for night feedings, it kept me awake also. It worked for us, I don't remember when she started sleeping longer stretches but she's now 3 months and she's sleeping 9 hours with only one break. Last night she STTN.

Re: Couple of newborn questions
i didnt use the changing table the first month. he slept in our room so i could BF and i changd him on my bed...made it quick. i also NEVER turned on a light. i used a flashlight actually then once done feeding/changing he went right back into the moses basket. thr breastmilk seemed to put him in a coma.

Re: Couple of newborn questions
Is he like that only on the changing table, or any time you change him? My thought is he is probably cold.
And he probably still has days and nights mixed up. Just keep things bright and loud during the day and dark and quiet at night.

Re: Couple of newborn questions
DD Loves her changing table. she is happier there than anywhere else.... so we put a mobile on it, SHE LOVES IT now.... she dosnt mind changes too much either, never really has.
It sounds like dc just has his days and nights mixed up, which is pretty common for newborns, it took dd 2 weeks to get it right.

Re: Couple of newborn questions
he DEFINITELY has his days and nights confused - TOTALLY NORMAL!! the best advice i got was to take him out during the day - get some sun on him (but not in his eyes) to help set his 'internal clock'. it totally worked for emma - within a few days (i did it every day for 3 days)!
the changing table - it's normal too.... maybe put up a mobile on it? we have one and that helped Emma a LOT - now she LOVES IT!!!!!!!!!!
mddle of the night changings though - try doing it on the bed. get a changing pad and do it in a dark room (you will get used to do this and be able to do it half asleep)!!

Re: Couple of newborn questions
DS loves his changing table so I can't say much about that.
But he had the same day/night problem. He's be up every 2 hrs or so at night, but during the day sometimes he would sleep forever. After a few weeks it got better as he got more acclimated to the day vs. night. It's rough for a while though. Hope it gets better soon!

Sounds like day and night confusion, totally normal in the beginning. It'll fix itself eventually.

Re: Couple of newborn questions
He'll grow out of both those things. He's so young yet.
DD hated to be changed period as a newborn. I tried to just do it as quickly as possible. Have everything at the ready before you start undressing.
DD was messed up with day/nights too. I didn't do anything like waking her up during the day and we eventually got longer stretches at night. DD did make a habit of sleeping in in the morning, so I would just sleep along with her. Our day started around 10-11am for a while.

Re: Couple of newborn questions
Ohhh, my DS hates being changed! Still does and he is almost 8 weeks. It was torture changing him before (still is sometimes). I wonder if he just hates the change in temperature when i take some of his clothes off to change him.
Can't help too much with #2 though bc i didn't breastfeed. BUt sounds like maybe he has day/night confused. When you feed and change him at night, keep things quiet and dark and during the day, let there be noise in the house and lots of natural daylight.

Re: Couple of newborn questions
DS HATES his changing table too unless it's right after I feed him. However when my Mom changes him on there and talks in her high pitched voice, he loves it. (I've tried to do her voice, it hasn't worked haha, DH & I said we're going to record her)
As far as the sleeping. I've found that I keep it DARK when feeding him at night, I don't get out of bed, I don't unswaddle him. I have a flashlight that I keep upright and turn it on when he wakes to eat. He's doing well at night...last night was 3 hours/3 hour/4 hours, he goes every 2 hours like clockwork during the day and usually the first two morning feedings he's awake, which he just learned on his own. I don't also change him at the 2am/ 3am feeding(whichever that middle feeding ends up being), which hopefully isn't awful but I've found it help. My first night home, I changed him every time and also picked him up and went into his nursery to feed....which I quickly learned to not do. But I'm not expert it's only been almost 2 weeks.

Re: Couple of newborn questions
1. DS doesnt so much freak out wiht the diaper changes..sometimes he does..but getting him dressed/undressed..holy crap..you would think i was abusing the poor kid.
2. the sleeping will get better..theres not much you can do right now..hes a week old, maybe 2. I asked about that on here..schedules and stuff..and learned real quick that they will just go on their own schedule the first few weeks.
at first DS napped a lot during the day and would give me maybe 3 hours at nite between feedings. Now its the opposite. some days he barely naps long stretches, but at nite will give me 3-4 hours between feedings. So they do get better in a few weeks.
ETA about the day/nite issue..i try to keep it as bright as possible during the day..blinds open, lites on, tv on for noise in the background. I dont tiptoe around the house..i make noise b/c he has to get used to that. then at nite,i keep it darker in the living room..sometimes i would stick him in his carseat once asleep in our family room in the darkness to get him used to it.
It seems to have helped him.

Re: Couple of newborn questions
DD loves her changing table, so i'm no use there. she just loves to be naked. when we get her dressed, especially her onesie, she gets upset.
as for the sleeping, it's the day/night reversals. DD was like that too. she would sleep all day long, then wake up every 2 hours to eat and stay up for an hour. now she still takes long naps (she's currently been napping for 4 hours), but she also sleeps better at night, waking up once or twice, eating, then going right back to sleep. your DS will get more used to a day/night pattern. during the day make sure the lights are on, that it's noisy, it helps them learn their days from their nights.
