Crazy parents at sports

I had a doctor appt this AM so I missed out, but DH just came back....

Soccer wasn't canceled this AM.

Only like 3 people showed up. Not even the coach.

Apparently a husband and wife almost came to blows with the head of the league because he decided to cancel the game.

These are 5 and 6 year olds.

It's not the World Cup.

I met these two previously and there's definitely something off about them, but there were similar class acts on his T ball team.

I heard it only gets worse as the kids get older.....

I never did sports as a kid and I kind of regret it, but how do you deal with the crazy parents?

Re: Crazy parents at sports

You ignore them and learn from them, always use their behavior as "what not to do."

And youre right. It does get worse as they get older, but you also get better at rising above it. Sports are so valuable to children. It's worth it to have to tolerate a few nut jobs.

Oh yeah, I wouldn't get involved.

It's just so pathetic that grown adults act like this in front of children.

DH said he removed himself because they were trying to suck him in and he can be hot-headed.

Crazy parents at sports

For DS' soccer league (he's 7) when you register them you have to sign an agreement that you won't be an asssholes at games. It's worded delicately, of course, but essentially that's what it's saying!!!

Ha, I think you need to spell it out for people.

Do they even enforce these?

Anyone have any crazy stories to share?

Just wait... it only gets worse. I have seen parents thrown out of games, I have seen coaches thrown out of games.

People act as if its the world series, super bowl, and world cup rollled into one.

There are a lot of crazy parents out there. Seriously ignore them as best you can. But most are great! My husband coaches a lot and fortunately most of his parents are awesome!

Re: Crazy parents at sports

It really gets out of hand. I had the opposing coach of my 5 yr olds football game making fun of him and cursing to another coach right in front of me because he was upset when his flag got pulled. My daughter told me the parents of the other side of the field were making fun of him as well. There have been parents yelling "NO MERCY" before. Yes folks, no mercy for a bunch of 5 yr olds playing flag football. What kind of kids are we raising here people?

I am coaching DD's basketball team and am definitely concerned about the parents especially since I have no experience. I only offered because there was not going to be a team otherwise- this is really NOT my thing. And I have already heard crazy stories from moms of DD's friends who played soccer. They are only 7 and even back when the girls were 5 some of the parents were nuts.

Re: Crazy parents at sports

DH ended up coaching last night and apologized to the commissioner for these parents.

He didn't seem to be rattled by it though and also said just wait....

It's sad though.

I often see it though in my professional life....lunatic parents. I say at least once a day that if I could separate my patient from their family they would be much better off!

Re: Crazy parents at sports

I'm not a crazy parent in the way that I would yell at another child, make fun of a child or get into an altercation with another parent.
With that said, I am pretty loud at games. I just can't help it. DS soccer coach us as quiet as a mouse, so a lot of the time I'm by the sideline getting them in position, saying things like "protect your goal" or "get that ball". I'm usually on the side of our goalie helping with defense and DH and another dad are more midfield and forward.

Yes, I too am loud. I see nothing wrong with being supportive and encouraging an action during play. I also enjoy telling any kid out there nice run, good defense etc. even if they are on the opposing team.

I see nothing wrong with being loud at all- it's the parents who are nasty and show poor sportsmanship and want their kid to be showcased/given playing time at the expense of others. Some people forget that 1) these are kids and 2) it's just a game.

I'm usually yelling pay attention! Stop talking...

Our soccer league actually does one week of silent soccer - where the spectators and coaches aren't allowed to talk. It was interesting.

Some parents are nuts. They berate their kid for their performance, mock the other team, scream at the 14 year old refs, etc. And that's at the elementary school level. It's pathetic. The older they get, the worse it is. We had a coach on the other team tell his players cruel comments about the opposing players.

It's a rec league. Once they hit 4th grade, the more competitive parents chose another neighborhood league.

I stay away from the crazy & if it gets out of hand, I would call the league president. I actually used to chair a division in this league. We have kicked parents out of the league before, suspended them from games, etc. There are things they can do.

I once had to place a kid on a team with a stricter coach because he was bullying other kids on the team. His mom called me up screaming how dare I not put her kid with his friends, etc. Threatened to kick my ass & place a full page ad in the local paper telling everyone what a piece of sh!t I was. I should have diffused the situation but I didn't. I told her "Good luck with that. I'm sure the paper is really going to take your ad." then told her to stop being a psycho & hung up.

I'm so torn on the sports stuff. Chat Icon

3 of my children play soccer and one also plays basketball.

I'm just amazed at how competitive it is at such a young age. Trainers??? For 8 year olds??? Now we have winter training. Chat Icon And the only reason why they're doing it is because we're being killed by the opposing teams because they practice all year long with trainers.

I want my kids to play, but I want it to be fun and that option doesn't seem to be there once you get beyond Kindergarten. Chat Icon

As far as parents go, we've only encountered a couple of crazy ones. I've never heard parents on any of my children's teams mock or chastise a player whether it be on our team or another team.

Re: Crazy parents at sports

I am seething right now.

That same parent today started picking on the young ref. Myself, DH and my sister had to yell at him to calm the eff down and stop bullying the kid. no cursing or fighting was involved.

He then walks toward DH and challenged him to fight.

I can't.....DH walked away but I don't even see shit this crazy at work and I deal with people who are unstable.

The best was another mother kept egging this lunatic on.

I just.....I have no words.

A lot of the parents and the commishener came up to us though and thanked us for standing up.

I changed soccer leagues with DS because the only option for his age was Travel, and he isn't up to that skill level, and I didn't want to coach at that level (primarily because of the crazy parents... Chat Icon ). I was coaching in that league for 5 or 6 years. The policy there was that if a parent got out of hand, the coach would get kicked off the field, as well as the parent. Luckily I never was involved in anything like that, but I did see it once where a parent and a coach were yelling at a young (teen or tween) ref.
I'm in a new league that is purely intramural level, so there's no real stress and no real pressure. All the parents are cordial, and I haven't heard about any issues from anyone.

Re: Crazy parents at sports

You know, I'm wondering if it will be better if the kids have to "try out" for the team?

I kinda feel with the younger sports, any nut from the street can walk in and sign up.

If the kid has some potential, or at least demonstrates teamwork and other leadership qualities, maybe that can also weed out some of the jerks.

No, it's 10x worse with try-out teams. Then, it's "How come MY son isn't playing as much as HIS son?" "Why isn't my son playing offense? He should play offense!" It's often the crazy parents who push their kids, so sometimes the travel teams are predominantly crazy parents. Not always, but often.
There is much more investment in the sport at that point. More money involved, more time put into practice, more time and money put into travelling. I got out of the try-out teams for just that reason.

Re: Crazy parents at sports

DS has another game tonight and as of right now I'm planning to skip it because I'm still angry about this jerk and know I may say something if he opens his trap again.

DH is planning to go early and rally with the other parents to keep themselves together and not egg him on.

The directors of the league should ban him from games! Isn't there a code of conduct for athletes and parents for the league? If not, they should establish one!

I ended up going down because the guy apologized but I stood far away from that nut and didn't really interact with anyone.
