Credit Card Fraud

I need help before I go accusing people for nothing...

I have a credit card that I haven't used in a very long time. I just used it recently at the dentist (like a week ago). Today I look and there is an unauth. charge on it for almost $300.

Am I correct that it HAD to be someone from the dentist office, or not necessarily?

i bought those fancy candy apples and my card had crazy stuff on it. found out the store had been hacked.

Credit Card Fraud

Not necessarily. It’s the same as any hack but can be done anywhere along the process...debate at to payment proceeding company to lender and anywhere in between. I would let the de rust know but I would not accuse.

Re: Credit Card Fraud

Is it a pending charge? Sometimes they authorize you for a high amount then process the real charge and the pending never goes through.

You can def be hacked anywhere/anytime.

It's pending, but it's a charge for a clothing store.

Ah. Def report it if you haven’t already. Sorry you have to deal with this!

Hackers can steal thousands of cards and use them as bots to try to buy stuff. Anywhere you’ve ever put your card info is a potential risk.

I’m not trying to scare you, just saying the bad guys are very sophisticated these days and while yes a doctors admin could write your number down and use it, there’s a lot of other potential scenarios.

Re: Credit Card Fraud

Ugh that sucks. I'm sorry you have to deal with that, but the good news is that it's just a couple phone calls to dispute it, get a replacement card and that should take care of it for you.

This happens to me so many times a year, it's ridiculous. Sometimes it's hard for me to even see it happening because I use my debit cards everywhere. If I look at my accounts right now, there are so many pending charges from names of companies I don't recognize, for amounts that I don't remember spending. Once the actual charge comes through, it jogs my memory, but sometimes thousands are gone from my checking account before I realize it wasn't me.

The fact that you don't really use the card makes it seem like they'd be able to narrow it down and find out who's responsible, but it could have been anywhere you've used the card in the past. It's pretty difficult to trace, and for that small of an amount, they probably won't even investigate it.

You won't be responsible for the charge no matter what, so there's no sense in outright accusing anyone. Especially when it probably wasn't them.

I've been reading that if a card has an RFID chip, the info can be stolen just by walking by you. So that's interesting and annoying. Like do I really need to be able to just tap the card on the screen to pay? Inserting the card (or swiping it) has become too difficult for some people I guess lol.

Credit Card Fraud

Thanks guys. It sucks. It happens to my boss a few times a year too. I don't think it's ever happened to me. Oh well, there's a 1st time for everything, I guess.

Re: Credit Card Fraud

I bought the RFID envelopes for my credit and gift cards.

I have a startbucks card in my wallet that I only use on vacation. (don't hate me)

I knew I had a balance of almost $70 on it and hadn't used it in over a year. I went to check it because we were heading on vacation. When I checked it, it had only $2 left on it. it has never left my wallet and it was used only days before we were about to leave.

all purchases were made in Seattle, 4 times in a row.

Starbucks refunded me my money and took it very seriously.

I was trying to think where I could have been that someone was able to get that information. It's not like I go to too many places. Still wondering of all my cards, it was a gift card

Wow, that's nuts. I don't know how these scammers do it.
If only they would use their power for good...
