I can't think of any-but this takes attention wh@re to a whole new level.

I just don't understand why people would come online and make up illnesses. I believe it happens, I just don't get the motivation.

Me too--I am not aware of a fake preggo, but I can see how that would fit in this category too.

Re: Creepy - I read an article about this today

Not sure that it's the same thing but I knew someone who faked his own death.

Picture someone you knew on LIF for 3 years or more, responded to their posts daily during that time, you chat with them on instant messenger at least once a week, and have spoken to them on the phone at least once.

You share a lot of information over the years. So when someone comes on the board and they say they are that person's cousin, and that they were rushed to the hospital in cardiac arrest due to an allergic reaction, you believe them.

Meanwhile, the whole time, it's him. When you ask specific medical questions, you get vague answers. When people who know his phone number call him, they get no answer. He lived in another country so no one could just go to his house.

We setup a Paypal account for donations for his medical care even! After three days of this emotional roller coaster, after being told he was dead and there were funeral arrangements being made, he FINALLY fessed up.

I can't describe the violation we all felt. I cried tears over this person - this name on a screen. Sounds silly, right? But you've probably spent enough time on LIF to be able to have that kind of emotion for a friend here. Even if you've never met them.

You just never, ever know what people are capable of.

Re: Creepy - I read an article about this today

What you described is the classic example of this illness, or like the girl with the high risk pregnancy and blogged about it, and the baby died, all to be a hoax. Scary!

this happened on LiveJournal right after Sept 11th. Everyone thought this person died in the trade center. Turned out it was someone pretending to be the person all along and figured this was a good way of faking his death...

Re: Creepy - I read an article about this today

Years ago, I met someone at work who "created" a BF. Sent herself flowers with love note. A fake engagement, etc...

Years later, she actually got married and everybody thought it was a fake. They got an invitation and they thought she would cancel the wedding as if she had an arguement. But turned out, she really got married.

She had made up a whole life. Where she was born, came from a rich family.

And it was not the internet. It was "live" with co-workers.

I think all the examples are just really sad reminders of how desperate and lonely people can be, IRL and on-line communities.

No, it wasn't here. It was the first message board I ever posted on, back in 2001. And you know why he did it? Because he was an administrator of the message board (moving posts to the right forum, etc.) and the forum owners wanted to "remove" him from his duties, demote him so to speak. So he wanted to punish them.

We found out later that there were other things he had lied about. He posted pictures of a new apartment that didn't exist, a new car he didn't own. He lived with his mother the whole time, didn't have a job or a car.

He's still on other message boards I used to post on. I haven't talked to him since.

Hmmm, I remember one on LIW.

Yep. Obviously not on the same level as the LIF stories, but there was a girl there who had created two separate accounts and basically came on and called "herself" out on trying to cancel vendors and changing dates, etc. We all felt sympathy for the girl and tried to help her out only to find out that it was the same person. Obviously something was not right with her but with message boards you feel like you have a "relationship" or, especially on a wedding website that's already emotional, you cannot help but get wrapped up in it. It's very sad...

Exactly.. its just sad
Most people are good at heart, and will instantly reach out to comfort someone, even a stranger, when they hear of any sad tale. The kind of person that would take advantage of other peoples kindness, just to be the center of attention are the worst kind of scum out there.
