Cub scouts
Can you tell me all about cub scouts
How much is it, extra costs?
What is a good age to start?
How long is it, once a week.../ what is the commitment like
Where is it held?
I'm not even sure this will be something DH would like because he's not crazy about drop offs without parent. We really don't know exactly how it works so if you can please give some insight. TIA!

Re: Cub scouts
Starts in first grade.
Its about $90 per year plus fundraising and uniforms
There is one big pack night per month and typically two den meetings each month.
Our den meetings used to be held at school right after dismissal. But as the boys got older, that no longer worked so now its at the den mother's house in the evenings. But it really could be anywhere. At one point we considered rotating houses.
Parent participation is requested at many events.

First grade Tiger Cubs are supposed to be accompanied by an adult partner to all meetings and outings. Not all Packs are strict about this. For general information about the program or To find a Pack near you go to www.beascout.org.

Re: Cub scouts
I am a cub scout leader. The ladies above answered your questions but if you have any questions, feel free to ask me. All packs do things slightly different so you will have to ask your local pack how things work there.

Scouting.org is the official Boy Scout/Cub Scout website. (the www.beascout.org link is actually a subdomain of scouting.org)
There always has to be at least two adults at all times with the boys. DH can always volunteer to be a den leader or an assistant den leader....
I've been involved in Scouting for 13 years as a child, and this is my 5th year as a parent and leader, in various positions.

Re: Cub scouts
My son just started. It was $85 to join, plus the uniform costs ( about $35-$40).
There is a monthly pack meeting at night and our den meets once a week at night as well.
There are other time requirements as far as when we need to meet to do work for badges etc.
For ex. This summer we did a God & Me badge program and we met twice weekly for two weeks for like an hour and half each time and once for an hour at the library to complete a community project. So there is definitely extra time as well needed.

I would think every pack is slightly different. Our pack costs are 160 for the year, plus uniform. Sometimes you can get slightly used uniform for free or at least part of the uniform to help with costs. You can start in first grade. We meet once a month for an hour as a den and once a month with then entire pack. I know other packs meet once a week. We meet at our schools all purpose room, plus you have a few field trips during the year. Additional cost would be an overnight someplace. You might sell popcorn which will offset pack fees. A parent MUST always with be child, the parent is a big part of cub scouts.

Ours are 35.00 for the year! It must vary by pack then.
We have a pack meeting once a month and a den meeting every other week. I always attended with my 1st grader...my 3rd (now 4th) grader was right after school in the cafateria so I did not need to attend.

Are there any other costs during the year, or is that it? Do you have a lot of fundraisers?

No other costs unless we pay for camping (It's like 20.00 and includes your whole family and food) or our end of year tickets for the blue and gold dinner reception but scouts are free just the adults who want to join pay. All the derby and boats are free...We do the peanut/popcorn fundraiser only.

Wow - does your den leaders pay for everything they do in their meetings? I know the cost to council is probably close to what your pack charges and the registration fees have increased to $24. Our pack charges about $90 about half goes to council and for registration fees. Some goes to the pack to buy stuff for pack events, blet loops, badges, etc. and then the rest goes to den leaders for running den meetings (which isn't a huge amount). Our pack does quite a few fundraisers (bake sales, car washes, etc) to help pay for stuff for scouts like pine cars, trip at end of year, etc. We also use money we raise to help those in our community in need.

It is $185 for us!
I am actually not a huge fan of BS, but my DS wants to do it, so I am going along with it.
We meet every Friday from 7:30-9. It's rough

Do you have fundraisers? Do you have to pay for the Blue and Gold dinner? Is there anything during the year at all you have to pay for?
Almost all Packs have a similar budget for the year. Registration, awards, and charter fees are almost universal. Above and beyond that, each Pack varies how much fund raising they do, how many events they do/go to, and how much they charge for extra events.
For Packs that charge very little, they are either having the families sell a huge amount of popcorn (or other fund raisers), or "nickle and dime-ing" families for each activity during the year. Those that charge a lot up front, either don't ask for another dime throughout the year and/or don't bother doing much fundraising. Those in the middle do a combination of the above.
You should be able to go to your Pack Treasurer and/or CubMaster and ask where the money for the year is going.

Ours is $100 plus uniform. On top of that there are many expenses for our pack. There are trips, camping, many fundraisers, etc. It feels like I am always writing a check for some event they're going to. It's not cheap.

Actually uniform was over $60. I tried to get on ebay, didn't pan out.
We take turns buying snacks for the den meetings.
We have activities we drive to ( fire house, animal shelter etc..) but we do that on den meeting nights.
The pack does things like bbq ( familys bring food, chip in) , adventure land ( $$) , Christmas party and Blue and Gold...we need to pay for all of that too.
I find it very expensive and time consuming but so far my kid loves it.

I heard this a couple of years ago. Boy Scouts were rolling out a couple of "pilot" packs for K.

Huh. Never knew this existed. http://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Lion_Cub_Scouts
Pilot Program
The program was developed by the Northern Star Council and is scheduled to test for a total of 5 years. 2008-2009 is the first year of the program and includes a total of 262 of Lion Cub Scouts currently enrolled in the program. During the year, Adult Partners will be asked to provide answers to detailed survey questions and provide feedback on each month’s theme, plans and activities. The first report on the pilot program will be released at the end of December 2008 based on the October/November adult partner surveys and evaluations. The primary curriculum/educational outcomes are for parents/Adult Partners to learn the basics of youth development and Scouting’s proven tools for raising happy, healthy children. The outcome for the kids is to discover the fun of Scouting at an earlier age.
The Lion Cub Scouts pilot program will ultimately be evaluated based on retention of youth in the program. The initial results will be tabulated based on the number of youth registering as Tiger Cubs by June 2009 with a targeted retention rate of 75%. In addition to Tiger Cub registration, attendance at camp and advancement will be measured. At the end of the year, the entire program curriculum will be evaluated based on parent/Adult Partner surveys, evaluations and other observations by the local council staff. If warranted, the program will then be expanded to a larger area to test the initial results of the first year of the program.
It's a very limited program, which is probably why I never heard of it. Lion Scouts used to be the highest rank of Cub Scouts, but was replaced by Webelos Scouts in the 1960s or so.

One year, I got a good deal on cheap, small pumpkins, and those safety carving kits, and we actually carved real pumpkins. Especially if the parents are there, it becomes a parent/son activity. It's messy (which the boys love), but if you get garbage bags, and have them carve inside the bags, the mess is contained. You can also use magic markers to just draw on the pumpkins. It depends on how cheap you can get the pumpkins, though, and how many you need.

Wow 22 is a huge den! My hat is off to you I hope you have help with a group that big.
If you haven't done Achievement 9 Whats Cooking you could have the boys make a healthy snack (ants on a log, alien apples etc) and talk about healthy choices. As a craft/take home they can make trail mix and put it in a container that they decorate for Halloween.
If you do the pumpkin carving you can work in whittling chip if you haveenough parents to help.
