Cute Holiday family Tradition wanted to share
i started a family tradition when my first son was born where each year I buy them a special ornament (one year I bought them a box set of hand painted glass ornaments form Germany) each year I add one to the collection. i noticed this year my boys who are 8 and 11 asking about there "special" ornaments and saying I remember that was the year ......(it was wonderful to watch this)
My older son Nico asked me what made me start doing this every year.
I was thrilled to answer. I told him every year since he and his brother was born I have been buying them ornaments and will always continue to buy them each year and when get older and they have their first tree I will give them ALL of the ornaments and in the future they can share the stories with their wife and children.
just wanted to share maybe it is something other moms would like to do.

I started doing this with DH and I and will continue it with our children. It is a great idea, and even nicer that your sons appreciate it!

Re: Cute Holiday family Tradition wanted to share
Love this idea! My mom bought each of us a few nice sets of ornaments and gave it to us on our first Christmas out of the house.
Last year, my DS first Christmas I started the same thing. I bought him 2 ornaments that reminded me of him and put them away. I plan to do it every year and write a lottle note about that particular ornament/year.

Re: Cute Holiday family Tradition wanted to share
It is a fabulous idea! My parents did that for my siblings and I. I love going through all the memories when I put them on the tree. I've always cherished my ornaments.
I do the same for DD. This year, she's getting this one because she loves to draw. I was all teary-eyed paying for it at Hallmark thinking about her collection in 25 years. Image Attachment(s):

My mom does that for my children. I used to do the 1st, 2nd, 3rd....Christmas each year also as I was able to get the girl and boy ones so they are different.

Great idea though!

Re: Cute Holiday family Tradition wanted to share
My dad did this for each of us, and still does it. When I got married, I got all of my ornaments, and they now fill the tree nicely. My father wrote the year on the bottom of each ornament and my name.
Love this idea, and we will be doing this for our kids.

Re: Cute Holiday family Tradition wanted to share
I do this same tradition!! I actually started doing with my neices and nephews, but now I have my own DD and started doing last year with her. I also started a new tradition the year dh and I got married.. a christmas village.. the first year we got a church and bride/groom figures.. the next year dd was born so bought a baby store and mommie walking baby in stroller figurine.. this year I bought a rubber ducky store and a little girl walking duckies figurine (to represent dds toddlerhood).. next year I have to find a new baby item b/c our next baby is due in feb/09. The village we are tryign to fill with milestones.. Cant wait for my dd next year b/c she will be 2 yrs old.. so more vocal on what one she will like to have in collection.

Re: Cute Holiday family Tradition wanted to share
This is so nice.
Question: growing up did you have the ornaments on your family tree, or did your parents/grandparents keep the ornaments safe in their boxes?

we had them on our family tree, but most aren't really breakable. Some are glass and those we would always put on VERY carefully and more towards the interior for safety.

Re: Cute Holiday family Tradition wanted to share
My mom did this for us, too. Now, all of our ornaments are either handmade or were gifts to us. My mother even has ornaments on her tree that my sister & I made for her in nursery school/kindertarten, too.

My grandma did the same thing for me. We have 20 something ornaments. Every year she gets us a new hallmark one so when we got married we would have ornaments!

Re: Cute Holiday family Tradition wanted to share
I just started doing this too.
DS has his 1st Christmas ornament last year. This year, I got him one from lenox with his name and year. He will get one every year.
My mom gave me "my" favorite Christmas ornament. I had a pink angel. My sister had a blue one. I used to set that ornament in the tree every year. I am glad my mom gave it to me.

I love this tradition. I have been doing it for my DD and niece since they have been born. I love collecting ornaments myself and always remember where they came from.
Thanks for sharing!

Re: Cute Holiday family Tradition wanted to share
That is really sweet, & it is great that the kids appreciate it, but I just wanted to say, they waaaay down the road, when they get married & you give them their 20 something ornaments, don't be offended if your DIL moves some of them to the back of the tree, b/c while the tradition is sweet, if they live in an apartment & have a super tiny tree, the childhood collection may take up all of the space & not leave any room for him to start a new collection with his wife or for her to put any of her things.
Not that I would know anything about that. . .

Re: Cute Holiday family Tradition wanted to share
My husband and I have a similar tradition. Ever since we started dating, he has bought me a special ornament for each Christmas we have been together. It is actually one of my favorite gifts to receive and open!!!
