DAngers and Pool safety..WWYD???

My SIL has an awesome back yard, and an in ground kidney shaped pool, the whole thing is pavers (no grass), shes single and lives in world of no kids...it is a nightmare for a parent of a running, on the go toddler.

How would you make this safe for a toddler to go there... she could literally run right into the pool..there is no gate around it.

Last year she was young enough for PNP but she would freak if we put her in one.. (shes 20 months right now) HELP! we spend usually the day there or go there for night dinners and drinks with the kids.

THANKS

Unless your SIL is willing to put up a baby-loc fence it sounds like you are going to have to be watching your DD 24/7 while you're there! I know they have pool alarms that sound if there is any movement in the pool, maybe she could look into that.

does home depot have temporary fences, like the ones they put up during construction ?

maybe something you could bring with you and just put up temporarily and take down.

I dont know if that is crazy or not :)

I have a pool and todder and dealing with the whole fence/ pool debate now

yes she does have the alarm for the pool but thats only if people arent in it..and people usually are..she would never go for a construction fence...im actually thinking about getting one of those playyard gates and filling it with a water table and lots of fun things...thanks .....

We bought both our boys life jackets that MUST be worn on any deck around a pool at all times. I would never leave my child outside unattended regardless, but it is piece of mind that if either falls in, they will float instead of going under

Life jackets seem like the most practical to me...also those bracelets. Unless she plans on gating the entire pool, it sounds like you will have to be a step behind him constantly. A lifejacket could at least make you breathe a little easier (while still watching him like a hawk, of course)!

I like the idea of buying a playyard (or two put together) and letting him play in there, but how long will he tolerate that for? My DS would lose interest quickly and want OUT!

Good luck- hopefully by next summer he will be old enough to understand to stay away and you will be able to relax a little more?

THIS. Absolutely this.

They're going to hate going to their aunts until they know how to swim though. I hated, hated my lifejacket when I was little.

I am going to have the same problem this summer except it's my mom's house. I have a 2.5 year old and a 1 YO. we usually go every friday over the summer but I don't think I can manage 2 little kids around her huge (and very deep!) Inground pool.

sux but I'm so tempted to ask her to get a gate , I think she will be mad tho Chat Icon

I guess we won't be visiting as much this year,i'm too scared something will happen

I like the idea of the life vests tho!

OMG I need to get these! My mom has a pool and I am having nightmares this year.

I am also enacting a life preserver rule. In the backyard..you wear a life jacket. My brother had a near drowning. He wasn't breathing because he silently slipped through a tube (surrounded by adults) Soooo I will never a use a tube. Also, never swimmies. My DH was a lifegaurd and he hates them. He calls them death traps.

Even if the pool had a gate around it, it's not a substitute for supervision.

Our friends have a pool and we use constant supervision and a life jacket. DH and I verbally delegate who is in charge of DD, like when one of us goes in the house for something, etc.

I can't live with that constant stress so that's why we won't ever have a pool until our kids are much older.
