WWYD - winnings from super bowl pool
So, i won $300 in my office super bowl pool (yay!) and when i get in to work today, the person who is running the pool sent an email to the 4 winners suggesting that we all chip in to buy pizza for everyone else who bought a box and didn't win.
Personally, i'm really against doing this. It's nothing to do with the money (i'm assuming it would be about $20-$25 for each of us). I'm actually against the principle of the thing. When i enter a pool like this, its with the expectation that i may or may not win. There's not supposed to be any 'consolation' prize for not winning. Life isn't like that. The guy who's running the pool said "it would make the people who's money you just took feel better"
I honestly don't know what to do.. If i don't chip in, i look like a jerk. But i'm really against it.
thoughts?

Re: WWYD - winnings from super bowl pool
I think I might bring in bagels or something if I felt inclined to do so, but IMO, that should be my decision to make, not up to the person running the pool.
And I agree, you end up looking like a cheapo if you don't chip in I'd probably just suck it up and chip in...

Re: WWYD - winnings from super bowl pool
When I worked in an office that had the pools we always chipped in for something. I just looked at it as winning (using your amount) $275 instead of $300.

Re: WWYD - winnings from super bowl pool
Sorry, but when ever I have won in a pool. I have always shared the wealth.
I have purchased bagels or pizza for the group.
What is $25.00 out of your $300 really?

Re: WWYD - winnings from super bowl pool
when I won, I didnt share the wealth with the group BUT I didn "tip" the guy running the pool. It was usually $20-$25.
I never went into a football pool (or any other) expecting that if I lost, I would get lunch!!

Re: WWYD - winnings from super bowl pool
I would chip in only because I wouldn't know how to say no.
But what are we, 5, where everyone gets a trophy? I'm sorry, but if I enter a pool and pay $40 (or what have you) I'm prepared to see my money go to someone else if they win with no hard feelings.

It's not the $$, really. I question why there is a need to make other people feel better for losing. When you go to a casino and don't win after putting money in a slot machine, the casino doesn't give you something anyway. i look at this as similar to that.
When i've lost in the past, i would NEVER expect anyone to share in their winnings. Why would they? its their money that they won fair and square.
If someone wants to share the wealth, then thats their choice. I just resent having it suggested to me as something i should do and now it makes me look like a jerk if i don't do it. But also makes me feel like i'm doing something i don't want to if i do just 'suck it up' and do it.
IDK, it's nothing for me to fall on my sword over, but its enough of an issue that i'm very uncomfortable being in this situation.

Why'd you give the guy who was running it 10%? i've run pools in the past, and would never dream of getting anything out of it. i run it for the fun of it

i totally hear ya.. usually you give the guy who runs it 10% but its not a sure thing.. it depends on how much the final payouts are..

Re: WWYD - winnings from super bowl pool
First of all he has some nerve suggesting that. It is one thing if the people who won got together and decided to do it. It is not his place to suggest it if he didn't win. I would be annoyed.
On the other hand I probably would still do something so I didn't look like a cheapo even though I would be pi$$ed off.

Re: WWYD - winnings from super bowl pool
I've never really participated in any office pools like this so I don't know the norm. I guess I would probably just give the money b/c you don't want to look cheap and it is such a small amount - but I would wonder, why is the organizer telling me what to do with the money I just won? When I give money to enter a 'contest' type of thing I pretty much realize that if I don't win - that's it, bye bye 20 bucks or whatever. I would never expect anything from the person who won. Seems like office socialism LOL!

Re: WWYD - winnings from super bowl pool
In my office, it is an unwritten rule if you won a pool, you brought in donuts or bagels (or split with the other winner if it was a smaller pool). I won the second week I worked there and my boss, who runs the pool, said I had to bring in donuts.

Re: WWYD - winnings from super bowl pool
I would be bugged by the person suggesting to me what I should do for the office. That alone would make me want to smack them.
However, I did buy bagels for the office the year that I won but did that on my own, not being guilted into doing it

Re: WWYD - winnings from super bowl pool
Honestly, it would really depend for me. If it was done year after year the same way, then yes, I would do the pizza thing. If the other person is in agreement, then I don't think it will even be that much money for you both to pitch in together.
I have done pools where it is the norm for the 'bookie' to get a cut of the winnings.

Re: WWYD - winnings from super bowl pool
I really wouldn't think anything of it. I think what the guy was suggesting is a nice gesture.
I'm sure everyone who participated in the pool fully understood that if they lost that was it but it's still a nice thing to do.
I would equate it someone getting a hole in one in golf. That person buys everyone in the club a drink.
I don't think I would be bothered by what this guy said in the least bit... I'm not trying to be mean here, but I really think you're reading a little too much into it.
It sounds to me like he was just trying to do something nice, that's all.
