Day Care Concerns- WWYD?
Our DD has gone to the same daycare for 2.5 years. We have always been very happy with our provider, and DD loves her and the other kids.
My provider, M, is now taking a course to become a nurse's assistant. She plans to work nights and weekends. I have no issue with this, or I didn't. She had mentioned having an inspection recently, and I thought that I'd look online to see the results. There were several serious violations in the last 2 inspections (late June/early July), some which concerned us a lot, relating to safety.
DH and I know we need to ask her about these. I am upset that she was apparently not required to tell us, or that the state does not inform us. And we don't know what to do about DD. We are shocked that there were so many violations, which she has to fix ASAP. M has always been very meticulous about paperwork and regulations, which was one of the things we liked about her. I now wonder if she'll be able to do this new job and maintain the daycare properly. We'd fully planned to leave DD at this daycare till she was in school full time.
I don't know how to approach her, and I don't know if we should start looking for a new daycare for her. We have always had a good relationship with her and I want to maintain that. Whenever we've been there we've never felt anxious or worried, but we also take the inspection results seriously.

I would immediately approach her about the results of the inspection and let her explain. Sometimes its hard to say exactly what happened without hearing what the provider has to say... I would make further decisions from there.. Good luck!

I would ask her. I used to work in daycare and a violation would be something like "outlet wasn't covered". (they checked all outlets..ours were covered, just giving you an example) They (state) even went as far as checking garbage pails & covers. If your comfortable, just ask her.

Re: Day Care Concerns- WWYD?
My daycare had violations ( I check the site regularly) and I really like my daycare, but I immed. called provider for explanation of each one...some things like no lid on gargabe can happen in my own home, so I just wanted to hear her side of the story beore getting too crazy. It was not hard at all to approach her, and she was not offended. SO def. ask the provider about it. I approached it as, "Since I regularly check the states website for inspection results I noticed you had some violations that I am concerned about, and would like to talk to you about"
Good luck

What website do you go on to check for violations? Can you provide it? DS starts daycare in Sept. and I'd like to check. Thanks!

Re: Day Care Concerns- WWYD?
I wouldnt worry until you hear what they were.
Ours has had violations as well, but one for instance was the doors are supposed to have a certain amount of tension so they dont slam shut on little ones. One door didnt have enough tension and closed quicker than allowed. We also had a no lid on garbage can, which was in a room not even being used at the time bc the heat wasnt working properly, yet still counts as a violation.
So I would see what they were first before you worry.

Re: Day Care Concerns- WWYD?
Crashing but I was a licensed daycare provider and those violations which they call serious are sometimes ridiculous. Not having paper towel in the bathroom or a a child's shoe being left out in the middle of the room is considered serious. I doubt it was anything major, if she was endangering the children you would be called immediately by the state to pick up your child.

Re: Day Care Concerns- WWYD?
I am a licensed NYS daycare provider myself...Fortunately (knock wood) I have never had a violation of any sort
When we have provider meetings, this is a major issue...The "inspectors' sadly have a reputation for nit-picking I guess you would call it...
They also really need to re-vamp the NYS site to reflect what the violation is specifically because as a PP said it can be blown out of proportion...
Here is a bogus example- One of the regulations may state something to the effect of dangerous obstruction to an emergency exit and in reality , there was a tonka truck in front of a door kwim ?
Also, currently the inspectors have no formal training in childcare and most have never even worked in/with children and may not even be parents themselves...It is a civil service position that requires a written exam...This is also something that Quality Stars NY ( something that is being implemented by NYS to improve quality of care) is trying to address...
I would simply ask the provider if she wouldn't mind sharing with you what the violation was referncing and if you really don't feel comfortable you can always call the licenser/registrar but I'd try the provider first

Re: Day Care Concerns- WWYD?
It would depend on what the violations were. I know in my child's daycare (and they've been to THREE), it seemed like they were nitpicking. Inspectors are there to find something wrong & they do - even in the best of daycares.
I think I would be more concerned with her schedule than the violations. When is she sleeping? Is she sleeping & her staff are watching the kids? That's ok but she doesn't count in the ratio - and she would be wide awake for an inspection. What kind of qualifications does the staff have?

I am worried about the schedule- but at this point she's still training and does not have a job yet. Her sister is her assistant and she ran a daycare as well. I am not sure if her daycare was licensed- I know the main provider has done workshops, etc. on nutrition, CPR, etc. because she has all the certificates posted on her info board.
Here is the site for those interested:
NYS Daycare Search
As for the violations themselves- I did find that some were nitpicky and not a concern.
These are the ones that worried me:
Suitable precautions must be taken to eliminate all conditions in areas accessible to children which pose a safety or health hazard.
All matches, lighters, medicines, drugs, cleaning materials, detergents, aerosol cans and other poisonous or toxic materials must be stored in their original containers, and must be used in such a way that they will not contaminate play surfaces, food or food preparation areas, or constitute a hazard to children. Such materials must be kept in a place inaccessible to children.
handbags, backpacks or briefcases belonging to adults; plastic bags; and toys and objects small enough for children to swallow must be used and stored in such a manner that they are not accessible to children;

Re: Day Care Concerns- WWYD?
just wanted to share --
i looked up my DD's daycare and they had this violation for this year as well:
Suitable precautions must be taken to eliminate all conditions in areas accessible to children which pose a safety or health hazard.
then again, basically every daycare that I looked at had it. im taking it with a grain of salt

Re: Day Care Concerns- WWYD?
I have to say, doesnt mean there cant be violation free centers and that all centers have some form of violations. Mine had them listed when I enrolled DS 3 years ago, and currently has 0 violations in the last 2 years. So it is possible, who knew. I would question the center on the violations and wait to see if you are comfortable with the answers.
