daycare mommies...when was your child transitioned to a cot?

My DS will be 16 months when he starts at a new daycare Feb. 1st. He will have naptime on a cot. This will be new to him, since he has always been in a pack n play.I am nervous that he really is not ready, should i insist he be kept in a pack nplay , or is this an okay age to transition?Chat Icon

Re: daycare mommies...when was your child transitioned to a cot?

DD was transitioned at 13 months. I was quite hesitant about it especially since she is quite the restful sleeper (tosses and turns quite a bit).

I have to say she spent about 1/2 the week on the cot, and 1/2 the week in the crib - always starting out on the cot and they would move her to the crib on the days she was restless. I have to say, since napping on the cot, she tosses and turns much less at night now. The transition took maybe 3 weeks for her to completely be out of the daycare crib and fully on her cot.

Wow..so even younger. My DS is a very restless sleeper too. They said they can put him in pack n play if he can't adjust, but to try and give it a couple of weeks....we shall see how it goes. I just hate all the changes. New place, new routine though I guess....

A little over 12 months. He seemed to transition well and was taking decent naps pretty quickly.

When we moved to our new daycare the room he went into was cot-sleeping - 14 months. I admit that I was nervous but excited too. To me it was a huge deal...another step to becoming a big boy...but in all honesty it was such a non-event for him.

He did need some help and the teachers were wonderful in spending extra time with him to soothe him to sleep. He was allowed to bring a lovey from home to help too.

I think that seeing the other kids sleep that way and having the teachers help him really was what made it all work.

Now he sleeps no problem in the cot at daycare and in the crib at night.

I've looked at it this way - they are helping me transition him to be bed. When we are ready to get him his big boy bed I expect that he will transition well...not perfect...but well because of this.

thanks ang..thats a good way of looking at it, it will help the big boy bed transition. I know he will get the hang of it. I guess if he can fall alseep on the back of a bike, he can fall alspeep anywhere HA! I just hope they are in tune to him..current provider just really knows him well.

Re: daycare mommies...when was your child transitioned to a cot?

When she moved into the next class, at around 1 year old. At that time, they also transitioned all the kids into napping at the same time, once per day.

My kid was the most difficult napper on the planet so I didn't believe for one second she would nap at the same time everday, and on a cot.

Until, I walked in, one week into class, in the middle of the day, and lo and behold, there were 8 little one year olds, all napping quietly and peacefully on their cots. I was awestruck! Chat Icon

These kids are way more adaptable than we give them credit for! Chat Icon

I wanted to add that I was doubtful too, but since we have yet to take a vacation with DS, I was hopeful that the cot sleeping would make it easier to get him to sleep on an aerobed or in the PNP when we do go away this summer.

Re: daycare mommies...when was your child transitioned to a cot?

DS started going to day care 3 times a week at 12 months. The room he started in automatically put him on a cot and I never even questioned it. The cot is so low to the ground that even if he was restless and rolled off, he was basically on the floor. He had no issues making the transition!

Re: daycare mommies...when was your child transitioned to a cot?

18 months. I was convinced that it was too early (DD was in a crib until 2 1/2 at home). But she did great. Daycare said they NEVER have a problem with transitioning kids onto the cots- I couldn't believe it!
