Daycare making me feel like my child is not as advanced as he should be :(
My 9 month old son starts day care next week and I called them to ask about feeding schedules. I assumed I’d need to send him with his own food – mostly jarred baby foods and cereal. But they seemed surprised that he would not be eating off their menu – which includes things like pizza, Salisbury steak, chicken fingers, French fries, grilled cheese, etc. They said it was ok if I sent his own stuff, but that most kids eat the lunch they provide, and it made me feel like my son would be the only one not doing so.
I feel like my son just isn’t ready for that – I have tried many different types of table food and he is still choking on the pieces, unless they are cut up microscopically (like, ½ the size of a dime), and I know day care won’t be doing that. I want him to eat table food and am willing to let day care try, but I am just so scared he will choke and they won’t notice it happening. Am I being paranoid? And, do most 9 month olds (with no teeth) really bite into these foods, chew them (gum them) and swallow with no problem?

I can't vouch for 9 month olds, but if you aren't comfortable with it yet, don't feel pressured into it.
Only you and your son know what he is ready for.

That is ridiculous. My daughter was eating just foods like Cheerios at 9 months. Steak? You've got to be kidding!

At 9 months DD started refusing baby foods but she was still only eating very small pieces of chicken or meatballs, fruit, etc... No grilled cheeses, steak etc... But i don't think they should pressure you to do anything you aren't comfortable with!

My 11 1/2 mo is still mostly just eating jarred foods. Don't let them make you feel like your kid isn't up to par.

I agree too. My 9 and half month old is still eating baby food too, so don't feel like your DC is the only one. I can't imagine feeding her all of that stuff yet.

Thanks for the replies! DS doesn't really love baby food anymore but I have no choice, I have to get some food into him! I was just upset because in other ways, my son is doing great - he's been crawling for months and is almost ready to walk, he dances and claps hands and waves and does so many other things but with eating, it's just always been a nightmare and I thought maybe I was doing something wrong by not forcing table foods more.

I don't plan to give french fries or pizza to DS when he is 9 months old. Way too young for "junk" food. If they were offering meat and veggies (steamed or boiled), I would let them feed the food.

I agree - there's plenty of time for pizza and french fries - stick to the healthy baby food you've been giving him.

Don't feel pressured or like a bad parent and do what YOU want to do. DD won't even start solids until 6 mos, so I imagine she will still be eating baby food at 9 mos old also.

Thanks for making me feel better. They said the steak was like hamburger meat with sauce...so very soft...but still.
I just didn't want to be the paranoid mom. I know my son has to learn to eat this stuff at some point, but my mom said that "back in the day," kids didn't start eating table food until around 1 years old.
I'd like to hear from moms whose kids are eating table foods around 9 months - there must be some since that is apparently the norm in my daycare. I just want to be assured that if they do give him something, he will be able to handle it and they will watch him to make sure he doesn't choke.

I honestly don't think that's the norm. Maybe your daycare pushes the parents to feed the kids the table food since it's less work for them?

All kids are different. Do what works for you!! Honestly, 9 months was the age DS started to wean off baby foods and take small bites of chicken, potatoes, fruit etc...He is 11 months now and has just mastered eating pretty much all table foods.
Had I enrolled my son in daycare at 9 months, he would have been in the same boat as yours! Don't worry!!

DS is almost 9 months and he is eating small (VERY SMALL) bites of most table food- but I worry about him choking too so pieces are VERY tiny!
I think that at this age they still need to eat baby food because it would take HOURS to give them enough table food to fill them up enough!

I don't plan to give french fries or pizza to DS when he is 9 months old. Way too young for "junk" food. If they were offering meat and veggies (steamed or boiled), I would let them feed the food. exactly. I actually had an issue with one of the daycares I was interviewing. I asked if I could send baby G in with his own food and I would supply it in his own mini-cooler, and they were "not happy about it" and told me that they had food there. It was burgers, fries, pizza, chicken fingers, and all fried foods. I told them we do not eat that way and asked why there was no salad or non-meat options. The woman actually sighed and said, "well we have to please the majority of the people, not the minority" I was beyond flabbergasted, and asked what if someone had an allergy or a religious food restriction?
Needless to say they were immediately scrapped from my list.

Re: Daycare making me feel like my child is not as advanced as he should be :(
That seems early to me to just feed table food. My DD was definitely eating mostly baby food at that age. I know they did introduce table food (as did I), but it was more for the experience than the nutrition at that age. I would also worry that they would not cut the food up enough and/or not properly supervise his eating if he still has a gag reflex. If they will supervise him and you think he's ready you can let them offer him some of the food, but I would think he would still need mostly the jarred foods.
One thing, did you actually talk to the teacher in the room or just someone from the day care? Sometimes the person who handles the calls may not spend a majority of time in the infant room so they may not realize how the feedings go.

I dont know, maybe I'm going to be an evil mommy, but I wouldnt even want my kid eating all that junk - that doesnt sound healthy to me!!!
I dont want Cailen eating fries and grilled cheese when he is 9 mts old... plus he's being raised vegetarian so there goes the steak and chicken fingers anyway....
I would much rather send in my own food - pureed veggies and fruits and whatever....
ETA - I just read everyone's responses about also thinking this food sounds junky - glad to see I'm not evil....

American cheese isnt healthy - its all processed and oil.... and grilled in butter, usually. Lots of grease and fat... I would prefer Cailen to not eat that way as long as I can help it (small window of opportunity )

Well, the butter and cheese are full of fat ,but with that said, I grew up on junky foods (Fish Sticks, tator tots, pot pies, etc.) and I have no health problems thus far in life, nor do my siblings.
