daycare moms of infants/toddlers...need advise.

DS has been going to this daycare since he's 11 weeks old. He's almost 14 months and still in the infant room. they've been telling me that he'll move to the toddler room when he can walk.

i find out today that they're moving him january 13th whether he can walk or not! and all because they have more babies in the room and need the room. Chat Icon im really p!ssed about this! DS has had a gross motor delay and gets PT through EI. how do i know hes not gonna be crawling around in there for months while all the other kids are running around him! this is really bothering me. i told the teacher im not happy and im going to call the director tomorrow. i called DS's physical therapist when i got home and im waiting to talk to her about this. the teacher tried to make it better by saying that with him in the toddler room around kids that are walking will encourage him to walk, but i dont think so.

THEN she tells me that once in the toddler room they WONT feed him dinner. um excuse me?! DS gets picked up at 6pm and in bed by 6:30. he sleeps 12 hours. how do they expect him to eat??? he eats now at 5pm. shes telling me i should start changing his schedule now. ugh no!! this is insane to me.

what do you guys think? ive never had a problem with them before. the hours are great, the price is good and they supply breakfast, lunch and snacks. does this sound normal when moving rooms??

No way should they be moving a non-walker into a room full of walkers. Before you get really upset speak to the Director once she hears your concerns she may change her mind. If your PT backs you up they really have no choice.

well i dont know. how close to walking is he?

we were told that they would move DS to the 6-12 month room until he was mobile = crawling. welp, he is already transitioning and will begin his first FULL day on 12/13. he still isnt crawling.

i think of it as, they learn by example. maybe being with the walkers will help Ian?

This type of situation happens often..sometimes I am okay with it and other times I complain. With Lucas I was always okay with it because it always seemed that the timing was appropriate...he was progressing and I thought it would help to be around children that were already a level ahead. He responded well so it didn't bother me as much even though I knew most times it was because they were placing new kids.

With Gregory it has been different. They moved him out of newborn after only a month meanwhile there were other kids that stayed behind that were older (but they were new). I hated that he was going to Infant because those kids are sick more often and many were already mobile whereas he was not. At the same time I used Lucas' experience as a point of reference and let them do it. Of course now they move him back to newborn at least 2 times per week for ratio. I told them that has to stop..it can't always be him. They made the decision and now they have to stick to it. Plus I won't let them sleep him in ths swing there Chat Icon

Personally, I think that most of the time it is to the child's benefit to move up as long as it's not too soon. It's good for them to have the challenge of that next level. Watching the other kids do things often leads to attempts to do the same. At the same time...daycares are a business and they operate as such...it's about making money and that means taking in new kids. Because of that I say speak up if this bothers you and express your concerns. Listen to what they have to say and expect that they will offer an alternative arrangment should the new one not work out.

Definitely talk to the director about that. He absolutely should have dinner. Both centers that Lucas would feed him as long as I provided the dinner. Their kitchen was closed so they could not get him anything but they could warm up what I sent.

At DS's daycare, they move babies/toddlers based on age, not abilities. There is a 15 month old that isn't walking, but he gets around just fine. I don't think the others are walking all over him.... But I do understand your concern.

As far as dinner, it should be non negotiable. What time is lunch? They shouldn't expect a young toddler to survive x amount of hours without a meal. I'd push to make them feed him.

we had similar problems when my son moved up

my ds moved up at 11.5 months with kids that were all walking and he was not and still is not at 14.5 months - the kids in his room were 13-16 months when he moved up - they moved him up to keep him with his best friend which was good

all of the other kids in his room sleep on cots - my son sleeps in a crib still - i prefer - they need the cribs for evacuation anyway

we had the same problem as you about dinner - my ds gets picked up at 6 and we have a half hour ride home - andhe goes to bed at 7 - at first they gave him his dinner when they had snack at 4:30 but he wanted the snack more - so i gave up him having dinner there - but if it works best for you i would discuss with the director

it has been good for my son because there are older toys - he can climb up the slide himself, loves the rocking horse and jumping zebra- toys he would not have in the infant room - so even though he is not walking he gets around fine and has more appropriate toy for him
