Daycare Moms...Need Solid Advice...Pleaaaaaaaaaase

Ok so i am putting Milan in daycare now as he will be 12 months soon. DH and I went to see a couple of places yesterday. We liked one place b/c she is a 4 Keystone Star daycare(In PA the daycares go by starts. 4 is the highest star rating). Also her hours are flexible with late pick up times if necessary. We brought Milan with us and he got along with the kids very well. This is an in home daycare and she watches 6 kids during the day. While we were there she had the kids sing to us in Chinese and she also spoke to them in English and Spanish. Needless to say it seems like the kids are learning a lot. However, she has a dog and its a pitbull. The dog is very friendly as she brought him out to show us. However, my husband and I are very nervous about this. What would you do?

EtA: The other daycares I saw close at 6pm and 6:30pm and I wont be able to get from NY to PA in time to pick up DS.

I am freaked out by pitbulls - I know that is probably unnecessary, but that is how I am. in my job I saw a lot of unfortunate incidents involving them. Can you ask her to keep the dog in a separate part of the house?

Oh GodChat Icon Does she keep the dog around the children? I have a Boxer but I never ever leave him unattended with DS and I keep him in the yard when we have family members' kids visiting...you just never know!

From what I saw he is kept in a seperate part of the house away from the children.

As long as the dog is kept away from the children at all times, I'd say it is OK. However, if the dog is allowed to roam free with the children at any time, I'd be seriously concerned and wouldn't want my child in that daycare.

Good luck!

I wouldn't be comfortable with any home daycare having ANY type of pet, especially that one, around my child.

Period.

I wouldn't feel comfortable. And I was a pit bull owner until last fall. They can be great, lovable pets and I don't want to get into that whole debate, but they are very strong, powerful dogs with certain instincts that cannot be controlled.

I wouldn't risk it.

Re: Daycare Moms...Need Solid Advice...Pleaaaaaaaaaase

dogs can be an issue - I think a big dog like that would bother me.
We do have a dog at home, but I would never want to have to "worry" about it

I would keep looking IMHO

I would keep looking. Dogs, daycare and children don't mix IMO. I'm surprised she can be licensed with a pitbull in her house.

I know that aggression isn't supposed to be "the dog" but the owner

but it is just something i could not risk. Pitbulls have lock jaw and that is something that scares me to the utmost..

IMO find somewhere else

I would check out your local regs about this. I would be surprised if that dog is allowed anywhere near the children at all.

Chat Icon truth be told any big dog would scare me. You could ask if the dog is kept seperate but there is always a chance the dog will be out when the kids are

I wouldn't be so concerned about the fact that it's a Pitbull so much as the fact that there is a dog in general. I know that when DD is around any dogs, I am there with her and I keep an eye on her. I don't know if I could trust a stranger to be as careful.

I would keep looking. I don't think a dog of any breed should be around a group of children- even if he is kept in a different area. I would always have a fear that something could go wrong.

Not only am I worried about the dog, but she already has six children in her care. Does she have help? Also it may be to soon to know but does your son have an allergy to pets?

I am also freaked out by Pitbulls. I was actually attacked by one when I was 13. I was walking down the block and this man was walking his dog unleashed. I dislocated my arm when the dog pushed me to the ground and he also bit me through my jacket. I would definitely see if the dog can be kept in a separate part of the house. I would not be comfortable using this daycare for my DS.

My family has had a pitbull as a family pet and she was a lovely gorgeous gentle dog. Saying that, although I knew our pet and I trusted her (to a degree) I surely wouldn't trust anyone elses pet around my child.
