Daycare question (need opinions) - UPDATE

Hey ladies,

DH and I are TTC baby #2...when I spoke with dh last night he was concerned about the money factor (specifically for daycare). He is so level headed, I can't stand it Chat Icon

anyway, I currently pay $125 a week for in home care (ridiculously cheap, I know but that is the going rate where I live - I had 5 people give me the same estimate). Anyway, I asked her when and if I am blessed with another Chat Icon , how much more per week would it be to watch that baby FT when I go back to work

she said, she would rather me tell her what I am comfortable with and go from there. I was thinking of suggesting going from 125/week to 200/week

Does that sound reasonable? How much more does a 2nd baby usually add to daycare (I guess I am looking for a %age)

TIA Chat Icon

Re: Daycare question (need opinions)

Ugh-we are having these same discussions now (how to afford 2 in daycare at the same time). We have DD in a center, so it is a little different, however there is always a discount for siblings regardless of whether you use in home or a center. I would say what you are proposing sounds good. If she doesn't agree, you can take it from there and hopefully find some middle ground.

ETA: in our center, the discount is 5%, but that is a center with fixed operating costs, etc. I would think in home care would be a bigger discount and not really percentage based.

Re: Daycare question (need opinions)

About 1.5 times what you pay now.

For example here on LI it's *about* $50/day for 1 child. You can expect to pay $75-$80 per day for 2 sometimes a bit les, sometimes a bit more.. It's not double.

So I say about $200 would be fair.

I think its fair.

The lady I babysit for is pregnant with #2. We haven't discussed it yet, but I would only do both kids for 400.00.

right now i get 250.

I would go by Janice, since she does this and she does this in our area. So, a second child should bring your costs up about 60%, which is exactly what you are proposing.

Re: Daycare question (need opinions)

That sounds VERY reasonable!

I know our daycare (which is a center)- only takes 20% off the 2nd child's fee- and it ends up being over $500 a week for 2 kids!

Re: Daycare question (need opinions)

that would be $40 a day for 5 days...exactly what friends of mine pay for in home daycare for 2 kids...$125 is the going rate around here for in home - no receipts as well one child.

I think $200 is appropriate.

I know mine only does 10% for a 2nd child which is diddly squat Chat Icon

$200 is great but if you love her I'd be willing to go up as much as double what you're currently paying.

Chat Icon That's what I say to DH - maybe one of us should consider prostitution if we want a 2nd child Chat Icon

Re: Daycare question (need opinions)

An infant is a lot more work than a toddler though IMO. I would probably up it to $225 a week for the two kids (and I'm cheap! Chat Icon )

I agree with Summer.

I would pay her more for the infant, so say $125 for the infant and $100 for Miki. I know that at the center Christopher went to, the infant was always full price and you got a % off the older child.

You are paying the same amount as you are now for the infant and less for the toddler.
