Daycare...what do you think?
So I get the enrollment paper for September (they run her daycare like a school, which is great, but 40 bucks every "school year" and summer session for a placeholder is a little much for me since I am there year round)
ANYHOO, I figure since Bella is gonna tobe 3 and essentially a preschooler, the rates would go down...well, they're not...actually I will be paying MORE!
they have a new billing system that is not up to 8, 9, 10 hour day scale anymore...they are calling their "day" from 8-4pm and each hour after that is 6 dollars extra...
so I drop Bella off at 9 am, sometimes 10 and Jay picks her up at 4:40...so we have to spend 120 dollars extra a month now because they have this new "day" how many people (other than teachers) work hours that enable them to pick up their child by FOUR pm?? And what about me, who is slightly unconventional (I mean, sometimes Bella is their less than four hours a day with our opposite schedules)??
ETA: this is a center with hours from 7 am-7pm

Re: Daycare...what do you think?
Wow. I never looked into daycare so I have no idea what's normal, but that seems crazy. I'm sure they will be getting lots of complaints from current customers.

Re: Daycare...what do you think?
4 pm????? That is ridiculous for a daycare center.
Oh, and as a teacher... with my after school meetings and my commute there are days I wouldn't make it there until after 4 pm.

Re: Daycare...what do you think?
just to clarify, it winds up being 20 dollars extra than what I am paying right now, but I was also expecting a decrease since she was switching over to the "school" side and will most likely be potty-trained and receiving set meals.
just the 8-4pm thing si really bothering me, DH suggested we start looking at other places, but I REALLY love this place.

Re: Daycare...what do you think?
Most center's are until 6pm. It seems unfair to send out a memo to parents with a new day - For a lot of people 9 to 5 is the norm, plus commute time - making a 4pm pickup unreasonable. I would speak with the director.

Re: Daycare...what do you think?
It seems unfair and it's probably not priced competitively if your rate is going up as she enters pre-school. Where did you find a daycare open until 7pm, though? That part is great.

Re: Daycare...what do you think?
That's BS. What they're doing is giving the 4PM'ers a discount and screwing everyone else. BUT - if you love it there, and she is happy............................................ I would probably suck it up but definitely let them know i"m annoyed

Re: Daycare...what do you think?
My daycare's hours are 8-6pm.
If I drop off between 6:30-8am - $22/week
If I pick up after 6pm, it's $16/week
I think 4pm is ridiculous.
I'm in the same boat with the "registration fees". I was really annoyed when they told me that they "built in" if your child is out on vacation. So if you take your kid out for 2 weeks, you still have to pay the month. Yet, they billed me for 2/29th since it's a leap year.
Yeah, yeah, yeah...I know the teachers get paid daily but just burns me up.

it is really bothering me now. I get that my daycare runs like a school to retain quality staff, but they close ALL of the holdays a public school does (YOM KIPPUR, ROSH HOSHANNAH LABOR DAY, A WEEK IN FEB normally(but with easter its now the four days around easter, A WEEK IN APRIL (Passover), A WEEK IN AUGUST, AND THE WEEK OF XMAS AND NEW YEARS.
and I pay for all of it. including registration twice a year and now this.
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, maybe I should start looking.
Barb, just curious how much did your daycare go down between toddler and preschool age?
and also, this place is in Oceanside.

I have the 2007 price sheet right here.
the 2 year old program is $1211/monthly the preschool program is $1029/monthly
They're also only closed on major holidays (New Year's Day, Memorial day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, etc)
I do remember when Maddie went into the pre-school program, the price increase went into effect & I saw no savings.

Re: Daycare...what do you think?
yeah, I pay $1284 for five days, 8 hours in the two year program.
the "new plan" is $1162 for 3 year olds, and 6 dollars per extra "hours" which will mean I am going to pay $1282, sometimes $1300 in September, and the thought of adding another child to that, where is the vomit ICON?
PLUS the fact that I drop her off 90 percent of the time 9 am or later...

Re: Daycare...what do you think?
My son's school runs the same hours as a typical elementary - 9-3:45. BUT... I knew this BEFORE I signed him up. They offer before care and after care for an additional cost. I used to do after care - but even with that extra amount it was STILL less than most traditional day care centers - and the curriculum is fantastic.
For reference - I pay $730/month for regular hours and an extra 50/per month for aftercare - total $780/month. My previous provider was 8:30-6 and charged me $825/month.
I do find it VERY unfair that they changed the policy with a snap of their fingers and no real warning! That alone would make me look into other providers - regardless of the price. Your daughter should be 'grandfathered' in on the old pricing/hours.

Re: Daycare...what do you think?
since you are getting screwed at both ends - could they change her hours to 9-5? it's not fair to pay all that when she's not there that early, and (IMO) a 4pm pick up is freakin' ridiculous! What profession can handle that?

Re: Daycare...what do you think?
Our school is a little bizarre. The "school" hours are from 9am-3pm. Then, they also offer early care from 7:30am to 9am, and late care, from 3pm-6pm. I think it just gives families extra flexibliity in working out a schedule that works for them financially.
We pay for the whole bundle together - school, early care and late care and the total price is about $1100 per month.

DH is talking to them today, and then I am going to start looking around (my only fear is that when/if we have #2, this is THE ONLY daycare I was happy with infant-wise )
but this IS ridiculous, I am paying just about 80 bucks less than when she was a 11 months after the price increase, and just 28 bucks less than when she first started at 4 months.

I know a lot of centers that run on school schedules and I have stayed away from them. Many working parents aren't teachers and still need childcare during those breaks so it puzzles me as to why they do it.

I asked my provider this question. For her it was because her teachers are all mothers themselves and it makes it easier for them. Also it prepares parents for a regular school schedule that their kids will have once they hit kindergarten.
I had full time, year round care with my oldest child and was at a TOTAL loss when it was time for 'real school'. Since my oldest is in school, I have to find alternate care for him during school breaks anyway - so I usually get a sitter for the week for both of them.
Also, the prices tend to be lower for places that follow a school schedule.

actually we pay a pretty penny for daycare, more than any of the places we checked out and those other places were closed a lot less too and also have learning programs, but this was the one I felt most comfortable with from my gut when we were looking. It is a daycare first and foremost and this new day schedule is just ridiculous...I don't mind spending more money, but this just rubs me the wrong way.

I think they should give you a 'deal' or a lower cost because they do have so many more holidays than other places. That is why our provider is less expensive that a lot of the places we looked at. The fact that they are changing their schedule and giving you less hours - but still charging the same - would not sit right with me at all. But I also understand how hard it is to look for another provider when you have gotten comfortable and have learned to trust the one you have. It's a rotten situation to be in. Have you spoken to the administration about it? I know my son's pre-school recently eliminated the 2 day a week mini program - but any kids that were already in it this year will be able to continue until they 'graduate'.
Good luck!

Re: Daycare...what do you think?
4 seems really early. Unless you work until 3 which most people don't. I would question them on it, especially considering you drop her off later in the morning.
