DD is sleeping the day away... normal for fever/ear infection?

DD had a fever and cough that started wed night, took her to a ped up here they said her ears were fine, no strep just a cold give motrin/tylenol. Thurs night she slept 12 hours and woke up fri with a slight fever... then slept another almost 7 hours during the day off and on. Clung on me the entire day.

Took her back to the ped this morning and now she has an ear infection, motrin took the fever down but still was almost 102 at the office. She's on ammox now.

This is her first ear infection and fever for this long... she fell asleep at the dr. office in my arms and has been sleeping since (waking for a few mins here and there), going on 4.5 hours now.

Anything else I can do for her? Is this normal with an ear infection to sleep this much? We're up visiting in NY still and my mom is freaking out and making me freak out.

Re: DD is sleeping the day away... normal for fever/ear infection?

Jack has his worst ear infection 2 weeks ago. our first visit to the dr. they said it was a cold. 2 days later i was going to the Pediatric ER b/c DS was having labored breathing, fever wasnt breaking, and very lethargic. Ear infection, full blown.

he would sleep on and off during the day an hour here, hour there b/c he wasnt sleeping at nite. i think the sleeping is normal with the fever..it takes so much out of them.

the hospital gave us drops for his ear to numb it. they administered it there, and I did once more b/c he was in so much pain. other than that, there's not much else you can do .,

Hope she gets better!

I don't know....I don't want to be the voice of fear & doom or add to the freaking out because she is probably fine and she's tired. But I am sure you want honest feedback and mine is based on a personal experience. My son had an ear infection when he was 23 months (he's 5 now) and he was beyond lethargic, he could barely stay awake at all. After being back & forth the pediatrician, PM pediatrics and then an ENT doctor in as many days, he ended up in the ER and was hospitalized. He had an infection in his adenoids and it was not responding to oral meds.

I hope all is fine and she's just tired from not getting solid sleep but after that experience, I look at too much sleeping in a different way.

Same thing happened to DD a few months ago. It started with a cold & turned into a really bad ear infection in both ears. Give the ammox 24 hrs to kick in & just try to keep pumping her with liquids.

We got the same drops from PM Pediatrics. They actually seemed to work really well, and quick.

I am not sure b/c they all act differently....DD has had several ear infections and didn't really sleep too much more than she normally does...sometimes her naps were longer, but otherwise she was just more cranky, had a runny nose, and seemed a bit miserable. I would give it 24hrs and see how she is, then call Ped's office again. Chat Icon

It i pretty normal for an infant/toddler to sleep when they have a fever. It is helping their body fight off the infection. They need a lot of rest. When DS had his first high fever, he slept most of the day away. Just make sure she stays hydrated. Juice, jello, and ice pops are good.. If it continues for another 24 hours I would call the pedi again.. Motrin is great for fevers.. Hope she feels better soon...

AJ had tons of ear infections before tubes. yes, sometimes she'd do this. Just kept her hydrated. I would even have to syringe fluid occasionally cause I'd freak out. As long as she has fluids and its only a deep sleep not more, then Id say she's fine.

Re: DD is sleeping the day away... normal for fever/ear infection?

Thanks, I just got to check this. She slept most of the day and finally woke up for more than a few minutes around 6pm. She stayed up til 8:30 and then just wanted to go "night night".

She only ate half a yogurt ALL day. Had about 4 oz of milk before bed and that was it. She did drink a full cup of water and a full bottle of water though.

Hoping tomorrow she is better, I hate seeing her like this.
